Hideki Konno, the producer of the Mario Kart series, recently discussed Mario Kart 8 in a Developer Direct video feature.
Anti-Gravity was the key new gameplay design unveiled during Nintendo Direct today, where racers can cling onto walls and even the ceiling in specially designed courses. There's a unique course that looks like a mobius strip, so the studio settled on "Mario Kart 8" as the title for the new game.
Konno confirmed that online play will continue the standards set in Mario Kart 7 - with communities and specific rules for Mario Kart enthusiasts, with a Mario Kart highlights reel to be shared on Miiverse in a "Mario Kart TV" area.
In terms of control, the producer confirmed that there'll be a plethora of schemes available - including Wii Remote (motion), Wii Remote + Nunchuck and of course the Wii U GamePad with both traditional and classic play available.
The team are aiming for 60fps steady in single and at least in two player mode.
Mario Kart 8 is "the grand culmination of past Mario Kart games" and is due Spring 2014.
