No Tales of Games Planned for Nintendo Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With the Nintendo Wii U GamePad having strong potential for an RPG interface, there aren't plans to bring the Tales series to the platform.

The director and producer of Namco Bandai's ever-popular JRPG Tales series, Hideo Baba, was recently quizzed on upcoming games in the series, including a localised Western version of PlayStation 3's Tales of Xillia.

The franchise has had a solid run on Nintendo platforms, with the most recent entries being Tales of Graces for Wii and Tales of Hearts on the Nintendo DS. Despite this, there isn't anything in the pipeline for Wii U.

Baba did offer praise for the Wii U, exclaiming that it's a "brilliant console that offers a lot of innovation and possibility for new types of gameplay", but "at this current time we don't have any development plans to make any Tales of games for the Wii U".

The response doesn't rule out the series completely and with enough support Nintendo Wii U fans could very well be greeted with a new entry or Tales remake further down the line.

Would you like a new Tales of game for the Nintendo Wii U?

What about Tales of the Abyss on 3DS? I am sure it'll come eventually anyway!

This is good cause the last few Tales of games have been absolute crap both in story & Voice Acting quality. Rehire the guy who penned Symphonia, that's still the best one thus far.

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

U wot m8. Symphonia is dated and generic as hell in comparison to new ones, with pretty cringeworthy writing at times.
I mean one of the writers' ideas of a "good comeback" was "i don't see why i should introduce myself to a moron who doesn't realise how pathetic he is!! xD" to which a calm and collected archetype character loses his cool.

Well, story-wise Graces plot and cast is far more generic, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.
But Vesperia's writing, gameplay, plot and characters are far superior to Symphonia's in every way.

Symphonia was good back then, but to say it's better than the recent few far better Tales games is a bit silly. Have you even played them? (if you've played graces and didn't like the plot/characters then fair enough, but that's far from the game's salepoint)

Either way, I can see a Tales game coming to WiiU eventually, but til then I don't blame them for wanting to stick to PS3 and handhelds, their games seem to sell pretty well on them. I wonder if WiiU would eventually get a Xillia port? Smilie

PS. The guys who did Symphonia did Vesperia and Xillia anyway, they've gotten better.

Wii U should get a port at least or a beefed up Wii U remake of one of the PS3 entries perhaps? Thought Tales was a perfect fit for the Nintendo audience. Weird business move methinks.

The Tales series has always pushed the envelope in terms of cliches. Seriously the series is basically an rpg parody at this point. That said people love the series, so its kinda sad its giving the wii u a miss.

I'm quite surprised to see so many people bashing the Tales series. I personally don't mind if they choose Sony or Nintendo, since I've always had access to both.

But to say that the games have become stale and cliched is a bit unfair. First of all, they are RPGs, so certain things have to stay the same. And when you look at all of the other big RPGs coming out the past few years, there have really been no standouts. We were lucky to get a few great ones recently. Square Enix is in the toilet, and single-player RPGs are one of the most unpopular genres in the mainstream right now, if not at the very bottom.

You might be accurate to say that the "recent' Tales games have been lackluster, but that's because so few of them are localized, and it takes so long. The "new" game Xillia came out almost 5 years ago in Japan. It already has a sequel. It's a shame that we have to get the games so much later, because it doesn't help them seeming dated.

In spite of all that, I would say that any current RPGs like Ni no Kuni, Xenoblade, and the Last Story still need to pay respects to games like Abyss and Symphonia for story and characters. Those games are almost two generations old, and they still hold just as much water as most of what's coming out today, not to mention that their battle system is still fresher and more accessible than the traditional turn-based stuff we're FINALLY starting to see get creative again.

Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned the Tales series has always been at the forefront of real-time JRPGs. My point was that while Symphonia was great and really pushed the genre ~8 years ago, the Tales series has already grown so much since then that Symphonia seems aged and cliché even by today's standards. Symphonia isn't bad, Tales games just have a habit of always getting progressively better because while their tropes and exploration are never anything too amazing or exceptional, the battle system grows and imo becomes considerably more fun with each successive iteration.

I've heard Xillia's battle system is even better than Vesperia's, and Graces' battle system is the most unique thing to come out of JRPGs in frickin ages. I look forward to the future of the series; it's extremely unfair to write off everything after Symphonia because it's always always getting better as a game.

The two main problems I have with the series are:
-Characters are tired cliches, I understand its difficult to get away from some but it seems like they go out of their way, to copy and paste persona's from previous games.
-Presentation still looks like a Gamecube game, the cel shaded style looked basic and low poly back then, now it looks positively archaic. Also would it kill them to animate the characters and move the camera. Playing through Graces F you really do notice just how much time you're basically watching a static image with speech bubbles.

Giving it a free pass from criticism because its basically the only JRPG series still going isn't right. If you look at a western RPG like Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect or even Deus Ex Human Revolution and compare it in terms of storytelling to the tales series is like comparing Scary Movie to The Godfather.

Agreed. However I'm never expecting the series to become very developed in terms of visuals or characters because that's not the studio's strength, similarly to how Pokémon will probably never have good graphics because they're keeping mainseries development with GameFreak. The studio went into bankruptcy in the last few years, I don't think they have the revenue to develop a game with the level of visuals or animation that push a system unfortunately. (though imo Vesperia has a good cast and story following an impressively small number of tropes as far as the series usually goes)

That's not why I play them though, I love the battle systems, the length, the postgame bonuses, the character designs and the easter eggs. (Also the characters may be generic and tired but I usually find them to be likeable, except some instances in Abyss and Graces.)

Oh I believe we're going to get a TALES on WiiU someday.  As the system's user base grows, the chances of getting one will be even greater.  And considering Namco is working with Nintendo on SSB4, I'm sure we'll see a Tales eventually.
