RetroN 5 Plays SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, GBA and NES Games with HDMI Support on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

There's even more retro love with the announcement of the new RetroN 5 that plays various original cartridges including GBA and NES.

The new device, the sequel to the RetroN 3, includes support for NES/Famicom, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, GBA, GBC and original Game Boy games.

There'll be two controller ports for original controllers, plus an included wireless controller. The system will also allow players to use a controller to play games from a different format, e.g. SNES to play Mega Drive.

Together with 720p HDMI support and "higher output frequency", games are rendered for high definition TV sets in mind. Overclocking and save states are also supported.

Retro N is set to be under $100 with a release expected in July.

Would you considered buying a RetroN 5 console to play your classics?

Wait...is this allowed? I am guessing Nintendo aren't exactly distributing it, but for someone to do this i would think would enroach on Nintendo's rights? Right??

They're legal, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to be made. They're consoles that play the original cartridges - not ROMs. The hardware patents for the original consoles would have expired, so there's no problems with them making such systems now.

Oh i didn't realise that the patents would expire so quickly, i would have thought that Nintendo/SEGA/Sony and Microsoft would have long standing patents to prevent this.

I guess it isnt really hurting anyone though!

All it really needs now is an N64 cart slot and you're sorted, really. Possible Master System support might be useful, though the majority of greats are on the MD/Genesis anyway imo.

I would consider it, possibly, though have stuck to the N64 (cart) and rest on VC.
