Donkey Kong Country Returns to Nintendo 3DS, First Screenshots on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

One of the surprise announcements during today's Nintendo Direct was a Nintendo 3DS remake of Donkey Kong Country Returns.

The 2010 Wii title, developed by Retro Studios, will make its return - this time built ground up with the Nintendo 3DS hardware and 3D effects in mind. It still appears to be a very much side-scrolling affair with added 3D flourish.

Nintendo are keen for fans to see Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D in the flesh, and so a new trailer will be available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop later today. You can watch this trailer below, kindly uploaded by Nintendomination.

For now, a handful of screenshots to get you in the mood for a dose of portable Kong adventuring:

Possibly the only thing that disappointed me from today's ND. Really would have preferred a brand new DKCR with Dixie. The Wii style definitely works perfect for 3D, but just would have preferred a completely new game. If it was new, I'd be buying it :/

Although I just realised 3DS = no shitty motion controls. Which is a big plus. But still... :/

Is it going to be the exact same game? Just a port?

It sounds like it. It's being "reworked" from the ground up, probably to make every level really make full use of 3D. I'd imagine they'll throw in some new levels and a bunch of other stuff. Maybe some much missed snow or water levels this time? But definitely the same game really.

Le sigh.

Might give this version another chance. Never could get into the Wii original. :/

This is cool beans for me because I've really wanted to play it on Wii, but could never get round to buying it for a decent price. Might as well wait for the 3DS version now Smilie

Loved the Wii version - the challenges, the difficulty, and the controls were all solid. Too bad this isn't a sequel instead.

It will be great to see it all in 3D. I wonder how the controls will work. I'm guessing they won't use motion controls on the 3DS, so we'll have to see if the 3DS version controls as smoothly as the Wii version did.

Anyone know if Retro is doing the work on this?
