Nintendo has explained the DLC and connectivity features of their upcoming 3DS title, Fire Emblem Awakening, set to launch February 4th in North America and April in Europe. The game will feature a range of connectivity options, including eShop DLC, SpotPass, and StreetPass features.
DLC - the first downloadable map will be available free to launch buyers for a limited time. After this there will be weekly updates with purchasable maps. In addition to maps, DLC will enable new characters, items, spells, and so on. Marth, recognizable to fans of either Fire Emblem or Smash Brothers, will be included with the first DLC and playable in Awakening thereafter.
SpotPass - new DLC will also be available via SpotPass, the feature that allows wifi hotspots to communicate with your 3DS as you pass by them. This SpotPass DLC will be free and will include maps, characters, and items.
StreetPass - in addition to new maps, characters, and items, Awakening will feature StreetPass features. Similar to other games, the StreetPass mechanic allows you to create a team of 10 units from your savegame. Teams will be sent to 3DS's in range, and players will be able to find and battle the teams in their game, allowing them to recruit the team leader, acquire their items, and win renown which is displayed as their StreetPass level.
A demo for Fire Emblem Awakening will also be available through the 3DS eShop on January 17th.
