Nintendo 3DS XL Second Circle Pad - Why Not? A Mock-up

Nintendo 3DS XL Second Circle Pad - Why Not? A Mock-up on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Curious as to why the new 3DS model, the XL, doesn't have a second circle pad? Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata explains why.

In an interview with The Independent Newspaper, Iwata was quizzed as to why the new, bigger hardware doesn't accommodate a second stick to avoid the hassle of bolting on an attachment. There does appear to be space on the bottom right of the unit (see our crude mock-up image below), but it seems battery size was the primary reason.

When we looked at the design of the 3DS XL we had to look at various factors.

One was battery life, one was the overall size of the unit, and we had to make some trade-offs. The choice, if we were going to include the second analogue stick, was to reduce the size of the battery or make the unit much bigger

Iwata conceded that it was a call that the company had to make whilst developing the revised hardware, with the addition of a second circle pad making the 3DS XL shell even bigger.

Attaching a second analogue stick is possible but it would have made the system even bigger and, though it perhaps puts a burden on people that really want that second stick, it’s a call we had to make and these people will have to live with it.

Are you happy with the lack of second circle pad on the 3DS XL? Should Nintendo have included as standard with the new hardware?

You wanna know the REAL answer as to why? It's cause they're saving that feature for the THIRD 3DS iteration!! Smilie

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

I think Nintendo wasn't so smart to not include a second stick on the original model. It's such an obvious thing to include in the evolution of controllers and gameplay. So, you're making a console that can play 3D games pretty well. "Wait, what did we learn from developing 3D games? Whatever would we be able to use a second stick for?"
This is actually just really reassuring news that even the biggest, most experienced companies can make such mistakes. I love that.

You are not alone. I am here with you. Though we're far apart...you're always in my heart. Love u!

I love how blunt he is here. Smilie

Curious to see of all those who bemoan the lack of a second circle pad, which ones are actually aware of the extra shoulder triggers too.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that truly was the case. Smilie

I don't believe him. It's more likely that they didn't want to dichotomize their current user base. It still shouldn't have been overlooked in the first iteration because it was noticably missing at the initial e3 announcement--and was criticized even back then.

There are just some games that need that analog stick for camera control...oh well...maybe next time...

1) If it was designed how it is in that mock-up then I for one would find it very uncomfortable.
2) The 2 extra shoulder buttons would still be missing.
3) Only a handful of games use the CPP, and they can all be played without. If you desperately need to play using the second stick, they are giving you an option.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

+1
(especially the first point)

Also, for many cases, I rather like the gyro camera controls some games are adopting.

bull fucking shit, Nintendo haven't got a clue what it's fans want, they've lost touch with them years ago. No excuse not to add a second circle stick, just extra money to buy a circle pad pro and screw us over even more. No AC adapter? Go fuck yourselves Nintendo.
