Internet sleuths have uncovered a new domain name lapped up by Nintendo today that could shed the light on a new project - www.supermario4.com
Amongst his many years on the scene, fans usually look to the original Super Mario Bros games when pondering the Mushroom Kingdom plumber's best adventures. After Super Mario Bros 3 Nintendo dropped the name in the West and called the follow-up Super Mario World, still using Super Mario Bros 4 solely in Japan - causing some confusion.
The series recently returned on DS/Wii with a "New" prefix and a distinctive 2.5D look.
With Sonic struggling to recapture his youth in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Nintendo may try to dig up old roots to once again wear the platforming crown - that is if this new domain ever gets used. It currently points to the Nintendo of America landing page.
Company president Satoru Iwata did confirm that a "new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D" is on the way between now and this time next year. However, it could just be a case of Nintendo's domain admins ensuring there's no squatters on potential future names.
But what of Super Mario 4 - would releasing a new numbered entry under the Super Mario Bros name cause even more confusion? Should Nintendo perhaps drop the "Bros" and simply title the next 2D game "Super Mario" for a more contemporary feel?
