Could Mario's Next Adventure be Super Mario 4?

Could Mario

Internet sleuths have uncovered a new domain name lapped up by Nintendo today that could shed the light on a new project - www.supermario4.com

Amongst his many years on the scene, fans usually look to the original Super Mario Bros games when pondering the Mushroom Kingdom plumber's best adventures. After Super Mario Bros 3 Nintendo dropped the name in the West and called the follow-up Super Mario World, still using Super Mario Bros 4 solely in Japan - causing some confusion.

The series recently returned on DS/Wii with a "New" prefix and a distinctive 2.5D look.

With Sonic struggling to recapture his youth in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Nintendo may try to dig up old roots to once again wear the platforming crown - that is if this new domain ever gets used. It currently points to the Nintendo of America landing page.

Company president Satoru Iwata did confirm that a "new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D" is on the way between now and this time next year. However, it could just be a case of Nintendo's domain admins ensuring there's no squatters on potential future names.

But what of Super Mario 4 - would releasing a new numbered entry under the Super Mario Bros name cause even more confusion? Should Nintendo perhaps drop the "Bros" and simply title the next 2D game "Super Mario" for a more contemporary feel?

True, it could be nothing in the end, but I was going to mention Mario World anyway. That game is the true Mario 4, and the best of the lot.

Stop. Going. Backwards.
urg.

Sonics only needed to go back because it had many, many failures. Mario has not.
Stop appealing to nostalgia and give me something proud to be new!

I for one would love a classic Super Mario game, its what started the trend of games and it holds the crown.

Meh, we've already had New Super Mario Bros for both the DS and Wii, and in the end a name is just a name.

NSMB Wii is an awesome game, one of the best Christmas prezzies I've ever received! Instant multiplayer hit and still solid when playing solo. Hope the next 2D Mario is just as good - needs a little more than just coin hunting (still good though) - maybe some more missions per level, online records and better still: Wi-Fi co-op.

Yep, NSMBwii is right up their with Mario World for me.

I only wish they would maybe go back to proper sprites or at least make it look a little more stylish, the NSMB titles where a little boring looking.

NSMB Wii was first a game in a long time where I have actually sat down with my family and played it together and enjoyed the hell out of that. Even my mom and dad were cheering on and thats something very very rare in video games in our house. These types of games just bring family closer, the fun factor is there. If the next Super Mario Bros is anything like the previous ones then count me, I'm all for it.

I would love for them to use high resolution sprites, or maybe hand drawn graphics, like Rayman Origins. Nintendo need to change the Mario style like they do with the Zelda series. Smilie

Hand-drawn, solid block characters over gorgeous painted backgrounds in HD would seriously look awesome, awesome, awesome! Needs to really take advantage of the hardware/high resolution - it would sell well regardless, but would be nice to have that touch of quality visually.

I can only imagine Nintendo rehashing the NSMB look though Smilie

a domain name doesn't confirm anything as Nintendo cover their bases all the time. I can't see them releasing a "Super Mario 4" as that suggests anything after 3 was not part of the main series, which i find a joke if that's the case, what with "NEW super mario bros", world being called 4 in japan and so on and so on, plus there isn't a real story to continue from like sonic 4 or Megaman 9 loosely picked up from, Mario games always been the same basic story making any "continuity" redundant. The only plausible reason i can think of making a game and calling it "Super Mario 4" would be to make it entirely 8-bit, but once again Nintendo market the shit out of the 8-bit icon so much there's no nostalgic appeal we've not already been seeing one way or another for the past 25 years anyway.

They already did, sort of. Mario World 2/Yoshis Story has quite a pretty style.

Yeah, I loved the style of Yoshi's Story. I just hope they make something really awesome, no matter what it looks like.
