Super Street Fighter II, Strider Heading to US/EU Virtual Console on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Capcom have confirmed the upcoming release of Genesis/Mega Drive classics Super Street Fighter II and Strider for the Wii Virtual Console.

Last week the publisher confirmed both titles for a December release in the home turf of Japan, and will now be exporting both gems to Europe and North America at a later date. Both games helped establish the then new Capcom as a key arcade developer in the early nineties and a key player in the home market with successful ports to SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis.

Like the Japanese edition, the re-release of Super Street Fighter II will boast a new online feature to allow Wii players to compete against others across the world - literally this time.

A look back at the original games running on SEGA's 16-bit console:

Will you be embracing classic Capcom when both titles arrive on the Wii Virtual Console? Planning to head online for a round or two of Street Fighter - do let us know!

Excellent news that SF2 will be online on the VC. A tragic shame that more VC games haven't done this. Imagine MK64, Mario Party, Zombies if you could play with friends online. Wonder if the Wii U will take things further.

Total shame they picked up the inferior version to put online in. I'd have preferred it if they added online to the SNES version, or even better, release the arcade version instead on the Virtual Console Arcade, with said added online mode. That would have been ace Smilie.

However, from what I understand, Sega is responsible for distributing the Megadrive version of Super Street Fighter 2, and Sega was already behind the addition of online to both Puyo Puyo arcade releases on Virtual Console. So I guess Sega is the only developper/publisher allowed to (or willing to) add online to its virtual console releases on Wii (not Capcom...)

The Genesis version of crusty old Super Street Fighter 2? This could only be appealing to someone desperate and without an Xbox 360 or PS3.

Bleeech!

Ah, never crossed my mind that the MD version was the lesser version, but it's true. Still, it's something at least.

VC games with online multiplayer.

FINALLY.
