Mario Gives 3DS an Update on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Reports from Japan today suggest that the newly released Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo's 3DS gives the system a nice edition with firmware update v2.2.0-4. Tinycartridge has collected reports that the new update on the cart will finally give the 3DS the ability to join a friends game from the friend list, a much wanted online ability from system owners.

Other parts of the update include the ability to quick scroll through your friends list by holding down left and right, with your currently online friends appearing at the front of the list. The update is necessary to play the game, and it may have some anti-piracy measures built in.

It is also reported that this is not the same update as the one due later this month, which will include new e-shop features as well as the ability to record 3D video among other upgrades.

What do you think of this new update? Do you welcome the ability to join a friends online game on the fly?

It is something that the 3DS needed, now we just need more games to actually use a jump in to game ability.

I can't see them making this update exclusive to Super Mario owners anyway, but I can imagine why they bothered putting this update on the cartridge while they could have just made it only available through online system update.

Maybe that's because Mario is the most likely to widely appeal to the more casual audience who might not know how to connect their system to Internet via Wi-Fi, those not being able to update their system the regular way.

What games is this applicable to? I would really like to know.
