Gaijin Dubs 3DS Slide Pad on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Alex Neuse from Bit Trip developer Gaijin Games, recently discussed the 3DS Slide Pad, dubbing it "crap" and "very frustrating".

Since the 3DS Slide Pad became official, it's experienced a marmite reception from fans - some feel a second, bolted-on circle pad for 3DS is worthwhile, whilst others dislike it.

Neuse expressed his frustration with the move in an interview with Tiny Catridge from both a developer and consumer perspective.

Also, as a developer, it’s a bummer whenever first parties come out with something like this. Whether it’s the Expansion Slide Pad, Wii Motion Plus, PlayStation Move, or Kinect, developers have a hard decision to make about whether they want to support the new features of the hardware.

From one perspective, new hardware is very exciting, but from another perspective, it’s very risky; because if your game requires it, that means that you’re forcing the player to have that hardware. And not all consumers will have bought the new device.

I agree with him with regards to expansions like MP and this 3DS device. But a device like kinect is different. Its not an extension of the existing conroller its an entirely different device that does something completely different and allows for an entirely different experience. (be it good or bad is another thing)

MP and this circle pad are like an acknowledgement that the existing hardware is not sufficient. In both cases this is the case. The one circle pad has made it difficult to play games that arent based around the N64. Hence so many 64 rereleases. The without motion plus. Accurate motion isnt at all possible making games like Zelda SS completely impossible.

Fracturing the market makes it risky to make games that use the additional hardware. Nintendo seems to be developing a bad habit of this.

That info counfuses me. Are they criticizing the built-in circle pad technology itself (opposed to traditional analog sticks), or the second circle pad attachment ?

He's saying the circle-pad attachment is "total crap".

Which it is. The system should have had it built in from the start.

Ugh I don't like how they called it the "3DS Slide Pad". How are we supposed to tell the difference from the normal slide pad??
That's what I thought this guy was complaining about.. And that worried me because apparently Wii U will also have them.

He never called it that, Cubed 3 called it that. Read the interview.

I have to agree...

Total crap, means crap in every way...

I understand where he's coming from, but Nintendo is doing this so early in the life of the 3DS, that years from now we'll all be saying remember the original single nub unit?
This needs to become standard, and better to do it now when there's only been maybe a million or so units sold, rather than when it's 20 million.
I was a little mislead by the first paragraph, as I thought by frustrating and crap, he meant the quality of the slide pad itself.
Glad that's not the case.

Sorry guys, I won't be posting any more. I'm tired of getting minuses.

Hmm ... I read it that he thought the "Expansion Slide Pad" was crap .... which it is. Sadly, like him, I know I'll end up buying the next 3DS that has the pads built in. With gritted teeth with that knowing look from the guys at my local Game store ... Heheh Smilie

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those that understand binary and those that don't ..

Haha I wanted to +1 but I accidentily did -1. :p

I like how a bunch of people who have yet to touch the thing are agreeing with him on this.

So is the MotionPlus; It senses a axis the wiimote cant.
Its not just more accurate, its fundamentally different technology.

Umm...Ocarina of Time. Starfox = 2
Hardly lots.
(In fact, the original DS with no analogue stick has also had a few N64 ports - so no correlation whatsoever).
Ports from the N64 have nothing to do with the controls and everything to do with just making money from half made games.

Also, You have a very very shallow view of gaming and clearly no DS experience if you think the choice is between two analogue sticks or ports.

I suspect its quite the reverse, that two analogue sticks will lead to more console ports, not less.
Its not like the flagship game for this device isnt a port...oh, wait it is.

This. So much.

Everything has a consequence and a reward.

Your ability to put spin on a topic is amazing. I cant be bothered to reply to your notion that the MP is not an extension of the wii remote but something entirely different.(even though its only function is to allow for greater motion capabilities)

I would have thought that the original DS got 64 ports because the tech was in line with the 64 so could emulate it. I would have thought that the 3DS being in line with the cube may have garnered cube or PS2 ports at the beginning.

Earlier posts on other topic show that I dont care for ports at all on the 3DS. I havent even bought one because there is not a original title that interests me released yet.

I also dont care if the games released are extensions of existing games like Metal gear solid RE or are different gaming experiences (provided its not mini games or puzzles)

Im not shallow your naive. Since the PSP, devs seem to want to push current homeconsole games onto handhelds. And nintendo is trying to ensure its handheld isnt left out of this equation and left with reduced third party support.

I hope the slide pad has more of a matte finish type of thing. The smoothness of the 3DS bugs the hell out of me, haha.
