Nintendo Details Next 3DS Firmware Update on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Since its launch, Nintendo's 3DS has been missing many features that fans and consumers have been requesting since. Whilst they will have to wait longer for a Friends Messaging System, Nintendo will include some important extras for the update planned in November.

Mentioned some time ago, 3DS 3D Video Capture will soon be a reality, as will an improved eShop; not elaborated on whether Nintendo mean a bigger game selection or easier navigation and extra features. The Streetpass and Mii features will receive a boost too, with a Mii Plaza and new Streetpass Minigames on the way.

Nintendo UK has since clarified the update - coming to a 3DS near you this November.

This November, a new system update for the portable Nintendo 3DS™ system will enable owners to capture 3D video footage. People will be able to record and view moments from birthday parties, football games and holiday events or create their own original 3D productions and show them to others in 3D, all without the need for special glasses. The system update will also provide new experiences for people who have conquered all the StreetPass™ challenges in StreetPass Mii Plaza.

Hopefully play data is showing them certain features are practically dead and need major revision.

I'm really disappointed with the eShop so far, it feels so disorganised, some of the catagory names are idiotic and induce immediate confusion. How long will Nintendo persist with this overt stupidity in a lame attempt to unique?.

Ha, I'm not expecting a message system ever. When asked about a 3DS messaging system, a Nintendo of America rep replied by saying there's already one available, he was reffering to status updates, lol

Still no 3D Flipnote...

Yea that has been really disappointing, I stayed up till 5 watching the conference and nothing came close to excite me, maybe Skyward Sword but that was bound to happen but being a 3DS Conference, what the hell Nintendo, some of the stuff they showed just made me CRINGE like that GirlsMode game(?). Nintendo will never learn, they just going to keep sticking to their moto "We want to make games for everyone", you can't keep sticking to that cause what you will end up doing is losing your main fanbase you attracted since NES and SNES.

I not too bothered about 3D video recording, as the camera quality isn't so good, it seems a bit pointless. I really just want the important updates that the system actually needs. A messaging system is a must and to not have one in this update is unsatisfactory. I just hope it comes when more online games start coming out for the system, as it will be needed even more.

The Wii even had a messaging system at launch and you could even send photos to each other.

It's nice to hear they're updating the Mii and StreetPass features, those features can be fun to use. It's also good to hear further improvements are being made on the eShop.

I second the desperate need for at least a basic messaging system. I personally really don't care about or want any other features added via firmware updates; just give us this and I'll be quiet.

A messaging system would be nice. But given you have full internet access I'm not seeing why people desperately "need" it. I can access my email or twitter just fine if I wanted that. A built-in messaging system would just save a few extra seconds really.

I would like a better webbrowser though - have Opera in the eShop as a download purhapes.
I understand the current webbrowser needs to be tiny and ram efficiant so you can multitask. But theres no harm having a full one as well.
After all, you can also use the camera while something is paused - but you cant use all the effects.
No reason the webbrowser cant be the same set up.

Also, let us upload photos to our email, via the SD card if needed.

Anyway, new free stuff in the form of Steetpass. Major support in the form of MonsterHunter3/4, and a video recording mode too.
All seems good to me.

I don't know what is going on at Nintendo HQ nowadays. Have they lost the plot? Sometimes it seems as though they have.

No matter what the company or the dedicated fans think, the threat from smartphones and their increasing rate of encroachment into our gaming time is real and can't simply be ignored or dismissed.

I love my 3DS - as I have loved all my Nintendo consoles, but this seemingly arrogant stance the company is demonstrating does not look good. Want proof? Look at the share price ...

This is also another in a long line of articles that are saying similar things - I do hope someone in the management is listening !

Personally, I don't care for messaging, 3D Video ( 0.3MB camera was criminal) nor the new bulk-o-pad clip-on.

What I do care about is a company I have grown up with for over 30 years now, seemingly losing touch with what made it so great.

The best thing that could happen to the whole Mii thing is localising Friend Collection 2/3DS for the West

@DazJ

Hi Darren, long time no see on here. I'm in disguise ;P. It's annoying not being able to chat with you on 3DS when I see you online.

@Darkflame

You clearly havent experienced the utter woe that browsing on 3DS brings.

PS:

Watch the 11min Skyward Sword demo and change your mind.

I'm not too happy either, but I get the impression they are learning from mistakes. Even the lame attachment is proof of that. They should have consulted major devs during R&D for the handheld also...but Nintendo thought they were almighty in the handheld market, until they saw how Vita would better encourage the very best games to be made for it, because of it's control scheme and technical ability.

I think the best thing that could happen to 3DS is PS Vita outshining Nintendo's system with it's feature set. It's the only thing I can see that will prompt Nintendo into making positive changes. Both Kids and adults these days demand basic communication, we've grown accustomed to it and expect it on all mobile devices.
