Mario’s clothing and power-ups have given him a number of special abilities throughout his career as a videogame hero, from powerful fireball suits to a ghostly boo power-up. Some of these have only been in particular Mario games, with some not seen since his days on NES. That changed when Nintendo revealed that Super Mario 3D will feature the return of the Tanooki suit.
The UK Official Nintendo Magazine recently conducted an interview with Yoshiaki Koizumi, who has revealed more classic Mario suits will be making it into the game. Koizumi also revealed that during a Mario game is in development the team don’t always consider how many suits will be making it into the game and concentrate on gameplay ideas first.
Also, I should point out that we don't necessarily decide on what number of famous Mario suits will appear in the game and proceed from there - we try to find interesting gameplay ideas and then try to settle on what to do in different places. But I can say that we will definitely have some more familiar suits than just the Tanooki Suit.Yoshiaki Koizumi, Director of Super Mario Galaxy
