E311 | 3DS Firmware Details - EU, US, JP on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo has taken the lid off the forthcoming first 3DS firmware update - Internet browser and retro games ahoy!

Since launch fans have been twiddling their thumbs in anticipation for the first 3DS update and Nintendo have finally confirmed details of what's in store for the different territories when it becomes available next week.

  • Excitebike 3D will be free to download until 7th July in North America and Europe as an incentive to download.
  • The Internet browser will be included, but with lack support for Flash videos and games. Image uploading/downloading will be possible.
  • As detailed earlier this week, Pokédex 3D will be available for free, featuring Pokémon data from the cast of Pokémon Black and Pokémon White Version. Unlock Pokémon by sharing with friends and through SpotPass. 3D Augmented Reality allows you to view and snap your new Poké-friends in real life!

  • US 3DS Virtual Console: Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission
  • UK 3DS Virtual Console: Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Tennis
  • Japanese 3DS Virtual Console: Kirby’s Adventure, Super Mario Land, Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge, Baseball, Avenging Spirit and Downtown Special: Its Kunio’s Period Piece, Assemble Everyone!

  • 3DS Game Boy titles will be available for 400 Yen each.
  • New content will be added to the 3DS eShop every Thursday.
  • The shop will also contain screenshots and videos for related games.
  • Some Nintendo DSiWare data can be transferred from DSi to 3DS, but not vice versa.
  • Japan will also get Mystery P.I: The Missing Film and 3D Block Breaker for 500 Yen each.

Is it just me that wouldn't pay for Gameboy games on the 3DS? There's so little to them, at the most the they should sell them for £1 and some are worth less. It just seems so pointless, when there's emulators and roms conveniently available on the internet.

I'm looking forward to 3DSWare far more. New games are much more exciting.

Dissapointed that there is no HTML5 or Flash support :/

Yeah, I don't get why they didn't aim for the magical £/€ 0.99 price tag for those Gameboy games. I'm sure that they would earn more with that pricing because much more people would buy it.

I'm far more interested in future 3DSWare titles as well. Smilie

@Echoes: Nintendo would be mad to include Flash support that basically enables free Flash games to be played on the 3DS (probably same reason why the iPhone doesn't have Flash support either since it would cause trouble for the Appstore). I've read that there's also a rising technology for gaming via HTML5, so that could pose a problem as well in the future.

I'm expecting a dedicated Youtube app though which should be smoother than viewing it in-browser via HTML5. If they don't have that then...idk /facepalm.

Most original game boy games which I might be interested in getting, I still own them on cart format, and my GBA SP is still fine for playing them on the go, so i'm looking much more forward to 3DSware as well... and catching up on the odd DSiware title that I missed since I never bought a DSi.

I might get Shantae : Risky's Revenge at long last ^^.

Flash video would have been awesome, but there's hope that we eventually get some form of Youtube app in the long run. Here's hoping.

I can easily imagine why they didn't include flash video though. From what we know, the web browser will be accessible even when playing a game, so won't be using the RAM that is used for games. The web browser will be sort of be integrated in the home menu, and running on the same more limited RAM (a fraction of the 128MB total that the system has, contrary to what I said before), which probably isn't much for running pages full of flash animations, let alone videos. If they went for a seperate app, that would have been a different matter, but then it wouldn't have been accessible when pausing the gameplay to access the home menu, and that's what they were aiming for.

Then there's the issue of flash games of course.

The store allows real currency now, right?

400yen is around £3 ish. If there was a gameboy game I'd really want I might consider it.

THe thought of website developing free flash games compatible with 3ds controls (but not 3d) was definately giving nintendo cold sweats at night

Definitely hope for YouTube support at the very least - Flash I can understand as people have mentioned the free games, but definitely needs decent video playback!

3DS + YouTube 3D would be win for both companies!

Sounds decent enough, especially the unexpected early release of a Pokedex-type app, for free too. Hope it brings a few tweaks like chat between friends, but it's looking unlikely.

By the way, contrary to what's stated in the news text, technically, this isn't the first 3DS firmware update, that's the second one (though the first one was very minor)

I'm considering Link's Awakening DX, but there aren't any other GB games I'd buy (and certainly not at £3). Surely GB games are going to look crap on the top screen too. DS games do.

Glad that we get a bit of free content as well Smilie

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

The browser can support 3d images directly which is cool.

Still, wish they went with Opera as thats a far better browser in terms of standards and support.

Most probably. Flash could run quite decently on the 3DSs hardware and stylus would probably work pretty well with a large number of newgrounds games.

It wouldnt eat into 3ds game sales, but certainly the cheaper download stuff.

@Marzy: And this is why piracy (that's what ROMs are) is killing game sales. $3-4 for GB games, $6-7 for GB Color and $8-10 for GBA seems about right. I assume you didn't buy any Virtual Console games on Wii as well?

I did, but I regret two of my purchases, since I hardly played them. A Link to the Past wasn't very good and I couldn't get into Majora's Mask. Street of Rage II was great though, as was Kirby's Adventure (was a gift, didn't buy).

And directly mirror the price of NES, SNES and N64 games on the Virtual Console? That's absurd, they're hardly worth that much!

I've never bought a Virtual Console game. With these prices, it will stay that way.
