Iwata, Miyamoto and co also sat together and discussed the new pet simulator in the latest Iwata asks session, revealing that the team had been considering cats for some time, even potentially releasing a Nintencats game. The team had experimented with the concept on Wii, even on GameCube, but felt it were more appropriate to be able to touch and pet your dog (and now cat) in the palm of your hand.
Miyamoto adopted a cat and together with his dog and his love for the Disney film The Incredible Journey (later remade as Homeward Bound, formed the basis to bring both cats and dogs together in the same environment.
Adding cats effectively doubled the work, with Miyamoto and the team having to carefully distinguish the two, with movement, human interaction and physical features totally different from what they had learnt with dogs.
