SEGA have reiterated plans to celebrate the spiky mascot's 20th birthday this year just as the clocks turned midnight.
According to Andriasang the Japanese developer sent out New Year's greetings confirming plans to celebrate two decades of its leading franchises: Sonic the Hedgehog and Puyo Puyo. Both games were released way back in 1991.
Although Sonic and Mario were at war in the early years, the pair have come together in recent years and has let Nintendo embrace classic and modern works from Sonic Team, Dimps and h.a.n.d.
As noted previously there'll be "projects" to celebrate the birthdays - these could range from new games to enhanced classics, merchandise to birthday cards - anything inbetween. Could the rumoured Sonic Anniversary project become a reality?

More information to come on the Official Sonic 20th Anniversary Website (JP).
