Level-5 Wins Award for Ni no Kuni DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Japanese developer has won an award for the second year in a row for Ni no Kuni on Nintendo DS at the Tokyo Games Show. The RPG, which comes complete with art direction and animation scenes from the legendary Studio Ghibli, is due for release in Japan in December, with a PlayStation 3 edition coming next year as well. The game stood alongside other winners such as Gran Turismo 5 (PS3), Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP) and Vanquish (PS3/360).

Akihiro Hino, CEO of Level-5, admitted that he was "a little embarrassed" about winning two years running with the same game, but gracially accepted the award. Following this, he added, "[ Working with Studio Ghibli ] has been a great learning experience. Although a different field, I believe working together has has raised my production level."

Below is the trailer for the upcoming DS RPG release that was shown at the event:

It's a great looking game on both platforms and I'm really looking forward to getting it, along with the awesome spell book. However, the game getting the award for a second year on the trot is disgusting (and typically Japanese) given what else was on show this year.

Their industry is in a dire state right now, and it's largely down to their consistent failure to recognize the major advances in Western games, year upon year.

I wouldn't go as far as to agree with Inafune-san and say their industry is five years behind, but it certainly is behind. Thankfully a few developers like PlatinumGames take a very Western approach to games development.
