Well one could say the same for Pokemon games, I got bored at gold and rarely ever get back into the series.
Even diamond didn't feel that much different to the games 10 years ago.

Maybe people are just content with a certain formula and how a game plays.
So much so that incremental enhancements are enough for each iteration. As long as it provides new levels and some new variations on them it enough for some people.

Maybe.

I'm content with the battle mechanic revamps, additional gameplay mechanics, huge amounts of new content in every succeeding title, and different plots of each Pokémon game. That's still far more than 2D Mario can claim to have changed.

Plus Black and White is shaking the hell out of the Pokémon series, and 2D Mario still doesn't have one black sheep.

Unless you count Mario Bros 2, but I don't think Nintendo really intended that one. Smilie

Still feels like the same game to me despite all the fluff.

Starter pokemon, get badges, elite 4.

The get more mons. And Pokemon black/White changes the camera angle!

Mario has new power ups, interesting new levels,a fun new multiplayer mode, levels that zoom in and out.

Much more substantial than anything pokemon offered me.
I can see the improvements in my favourite series more easily than I can see them in yours. Smilie I think thats just the way it goes!

D: I don't get it, how is different powerups any more substantial than 100 or so new monsters to catch? Or new HMs?

How is "interesting new levels" any more substantial than whole new regions with completely different geography and character casts?

How is a "fun new multiplayer mode" more substantial than a franchise which has an abundance of new multiplayer modes with every single iteration?

Mario is 8 worlds, same themes, Bowser.

Black/White doesn't only change the camera.

- multiple save files
- Trading can be done from boxes and without the trade animation
- multiple rivals
- a single antagonist rather than a team
- a deeper plot than any seen in the series so far
- video chat and multiplayer missions
- Triple battles with mechanics almost completely different to those of single or double battles
- Different versions have different towns, dungeons, characters, and slightly different plots with more changes than in the past.
- Battle sprites are fully animated all the time rather than static
- A new country with routes that start from 1 again, rather than a new region of the same country

That's more changes than any 2D Mario game has ever had.

Sorry nothing really major for me, the basic game is going to be incredibly similar. *shrug*
Alot of that stuff is pretty basic changes that should have been there in the first place shouldn't it?
Plus i'm not too fussed on storys in pokemon.

I really don't want this to turn into my game is better than your game. I'm just content with what 2D mario wii has brought to the table

If all these changes come and you still find them the same, I can't think of anything that could possibly "shake up Pokémon" for you without making a completely original IP.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Pokémon's an RPG. Story and character is always a pretty strong factor. If you ignore story and character then I dread to think how you feel about Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

I think it's because of playing games like FF, DQ, DeasEX, or whatever has made me not really care for them. There just not that interesting.

Pokemon on the other hand is uhhh...a bit rubbish.

It's not that terrible in Platinum. It's basic, but it is an RPG for kids. Like the Mario RPGs, simple, but charming, with its epic moments.

Plus the characters in Pokémon are really loveable and well designed.

For B/W though that may change and we may get a genuinely interesting plot. Pokémon has shitloads of unused lore that you can find by piecing together bits of dialogue, and there's so much potential for great plots.

I hope they start using it.

But Pokémon's gameplay has arguably come further than FF's or DQ's in just 10 years.

And I still like the other 2 more than Pokemon.

Guess I just found the pokemon game play a little dull after a while, probably because the lack of anyone else owning a copy my age and the online modes being fairly terrible.

Pokemon was better when I was kid mainly because everyone else I knew had a copy and it was easy to do trades or battles.

Wow this has gone very off topicSmilie

The online modes are alright, you have battles and trades and those are being considerably improved for B/W. Plus keep in mind they were some of the first online DS games.

The online Pokémon community is quite nice when they're not unreasonably complaining about how terrible the new Pokémon are.

Yes this always happens when I get involved in a NSMBW discussion, because someone always brings up the Pokémon comparison Smilie and the two sides just can't see eye to eye.

Which is why I didn't post until earlier. I gave in to temptation. >>

Sorry. Dx

I just don't get it. How can people not see Mario Galaxy's magic? It baffles me.

"Do a Barrel Roll!"

Too those who keep saying this game doesnt deserve to have its sales, I can understand that Galaxy is a better game. I enjoyed Galaxy more, however, sales have a lot to do with success as well.

Take Viewtiful Joe for example. Great game, love it to death, but it did not sell as well as other Capcom games. Barely enough to make a sequel but not enough to continue the series.

Money speaks even in the gaming industry.

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!
