Boy I really hope that's not the case... They still have enough time to incorporate this into the final product even if this does call for a redesign of the E3 model shown. I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO WAIT AND BE CHARGED MORE MONEY FOR A 3DSXL. This thing is already going to be expensive enough with the software that follows...

Eh..no one is forcing you to buy the newer versions, you can still play games on your DSphat for instance if you bought one way back in 2004(unlike certain older iPhone which can't use certain software).
There second iterations of there devices are usually just cosmetic changes, the only major thing the DSlite had changed other than the look of it was the screen brightness.
DSi added a lot of fluff, theres the DSiware but it's not been very good so far and it will be in the 3DS from the beginning so not much of a loss there.

I think I may be a little misunderstood. I'm just saying that if Nintendo still has this window of opportunity to implement some of these awesome features they say are possible, why not do it now? Lord knows at the way Nintendo keeps coming up with these innovative concepts, in two-three years when the 3DSi or 3DSXL comes around, I'm sure they will have some new tricks and features to unveil. I just want to really get the most bang for my buck the first time around with this new system.
I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON IT!!!
