E310 Media | Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

To make things that little bit sweeter for the announced 3DS line-up, the new console will be treated to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

The console is already getting its fair share of ports and remakes, good ones at that, and Nintendo will now be adding the N64 fan-favourite to the growing list. Arguably the best entry into the The Legend of Zelda series of adventure games featuring the Hylian hero, Link, Ocarina of Time has been revisited several times, be it as featured in The Master Quest or merely in its Virtual Console form. Now, though, Nintendo is bringing kicking and screaming into the world of 3D.

Image for E310 Media | Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 3DSThe first 3D Zelda game revolutionised both the series and genre, through a tight control system, puzzles and a lengthy story. Over ten years later, it looks like players will be able to re-experience the classic on the 3DS. How things will work this time round, however, is currently unknown, as is what extras will be included.

I guess this will work, because Skyward Sword is the prequel...

Nah. Though it'd be nice to see OoT with TP graphics, there have been enough console re-releases of OoT. A portable edition would be really nice. ^_^

TP was pretty much OoT with TP graphics.

I'm not sure I like that the Water Temple has changed. They changed far too much in Mario 64 DS, and it lost some of its charm. I sure hope they don't change too much of this. Smilie

Never really played much of SM64DS, so I can't comment on that, but yeah they should be really careful about proper changes. They could easily ruin this classic if they don't have their best thinking-caps on with regards to alterations in the gameplay, game-progression, blah.

As I said in the other thread, OoT nubs shouldn't have a diluted Water Temple. I know that temple had something of a nightmarish reputation (it took me something like a week to finish on my first play), but ultimately it was finishable, and finally beating it did feel extremely gratifying, for me.

I'm pretty sure the changes they were talking about was having the status screen on the touch screen, to eliminate going back and forth from the pause menu to take the iron boots on and off. That's what they said at the roundtable, anyway.

Oh, well if it's just that then that's fine. I imagine constantly having to go to the item screen to switch boots might feel kind of truncated to today's gamer. I was thinking actual changes to the temple itself (beyond cosmetic ones).

I want a version to carry around and to be **3D**, you must mot forget this small detail.

Mehh.. I personally think 3D is kind of overrated, specifically from a gaming point-of-view, for a few reasons. Specifically for OoT3D.. the game itself is an N64 original, and was never designed to 'use' stereoscopic 3D, from a gameplay perspective. There was nothing in the game that challenged the user's depth-perception or anything. I'm sure they could bolt something like that on, but yeah..

There's also been reports from E3 that the 3D feature didn't work for everyone (regardless of where they set the 3D toggle), and/or some people experienced ghosting artefacts, and weird visuals. Of course these people could just toggle the 3D off completely, but then that negates the single key feature of the system.

I'm more interested to see how 3D is used in original 3Ds projects, not N64 ports. One more very personal note, the last six months or so as 3D games have been coming out (there's some on PSN and stuff), it's been hilarious for me to see companies regurgitating marketing blurb from the early 90s, with the rise of 3D polygonal graphics.

"In 3D!!" = lulz, for me.

OoT is too cartoony, I think the TP look would ruin it somewhat.

Also, as far as I know the Water Temple is being made easier by making the Iron Boots easier/quicker to take on and off, rather than scrolling through the pause menu.

So yeah not much at all. I hope. In any case they have enough space on the cart to stuff in Master Quest (and Majora's Mask, but who're we kidding) so there's always an option for a harder/original mode just incase the original is diluted too much.

I think Nintendo won't be silly enough to dilute it though. You just can't mess with a game that great.

Do you think the 3D will work for me?
I wear glasses, but I've watched movies in 3D and that worked... but this is without 3D glasses. It'll be interesting to see how it works for me.

To be fair most systems aside from Nintendo's don't even have a "key-feature". The 3DS also has upgraded online and graphics and etc, the standard console upgrade biz. It's good enough for any other console.

People at E3 were playing the 3DS with their glasses on and they seemed fine about it. I saw a particular video where a guy wearing glasses was giving his opinion, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Ah right, sounds good. Didn't want to miss out on anything and hopefully I won't be.

The way it works on 3DS is different. As you've already said, the 3DS doesn't use those stupid glasses like at the cinema. Being a wearer of corrective glasses won't be a factor for you. It all depends on the placement of your eyes in your head. Everyone has different eye-width, different distance between their eyeballs, and all people have a slight deviation in the height of each eye (one being lower than the other). For many people, this deviation is more noticeable than others.

So basically it depends on your eyes. I'm guessing those for whom it didn't work well were a minority, otherwise it'd have been something of a scandal. Those who had issues at E3 said that turning off the 3D feature made the screen appear correctly for them. I'd say don't worry about it, but maybe play a 3DS before buying one just to be sure. You may very well have eye-placement that doesn't mix well with the 3DS' 3D implementation.

To be fair, E3 is a strange environment with low-lighting mixed with bright screens, etc. Enough days of staring at bright screens in a dark room for hours and hours will fuck your eyes over. But still, some reported ghosting and general weirdness with the 3D feature. I'd say it'll probably work for you, but there's a chance it may not. Play one first, bro.

I'm waiting for the 3DS XL Smilie

I'm pretty sure it will work, even if it doesn't I'll still buy one for the awesome games announced for it. Smilie

I think they need to up the quality of the graphics a touch more. I'm glad it's happening though.

By the sounds of things, I'm guessing Nintendo only just cooked up the game recently so the game probably wasn't that far along when these images were taken.

Phantom Hourglass was significantly longer then Wind Waker and longer then Minish Cap too.

Minish Cap was a vastly better game then both though.
Length isn't everything.
Minish Cap just had more varying things to do. It was denser, with lots of neat ideas, and a charming atmosphere.
I liked the DS Zeldas but wish Nintendo kept Capcom making them.

Phantom Hourglass vastly longer than Wind Waker? Are you nuts? o.o

Although that could be attributed to the fact you travel around the ocean at a turtle's speed in PH, that still doesn't equal longer, only in the most artificially drawn out sense. The game itself is made up of hardly any towns, small dungeons, and only 6 items.

Hey SuperLink, nice point that they could fit Master Quest on the cart too. That would be an especially brilliant surprise, and would help bring the game to an even wider audience, seeing as we only got that game through the pricey and somewhat rare Zelda Collector's Edition on GameCube.

I'm hoping for more extras and surprises than just a remake... even though a remake of OoT itself is brilliant, and I'm not quite sure what else I'd want XD But still, for such a popular game and for the older guys like us that played it to death, I'd want a bit more. Portable OoT is fab though.

Phantom Hourglass was ridiculously short. It felt more like a side game, akin to Tetra's Trackers or Four Swords Adventures than a mainseries game.
Can't say much for Spirit Tracks, I just started it tonight.
Minish Cap wasn't too long, but it felt like an acceptable entry. I'm stuck on the final boss Smilie

Can't wait for this. I have Ocarina for the Gamecube, so hopefully there'll be some nice extras thrown in.
Not that improved graphics and 3D aren't cool on their own Smilie

How boring a port of a old Zelda a game and a 3D one to boot Smilie

I'd prefer a Zelda game in the style to SPirit tracks (at least it did something new and felt fresh) or a 2D one.
Leave the 3D stuff to consoles.

...you do know what the 3DS is, right?

So much wrong with this. Okay:

- It isn't a port. It's a remake.
- Spirit Tracks was 3D and not on a console, and you didn't seem to have a problem with that one.
- I'm not convinced you know what 3D we're talking about. Ocarina of Time is a 3D game in that it has three dimensions. But the 3DS plays game actually IN 3D. As in, you can see depth of field, with no need for 3D glasses. You can't "leave that to the consoles," because no consoles can do that.
- And if you were referring simply to 3D as in rendering, you're going to be disappointed. The 3DS is almost as powerful as the Xbox 360. I'm not expecting a whole fleet of two-dimentional games.

In any case, remaking an old game as a launch title doesn't mean they won't ever make a new game for the system. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck with the top-down style of the GBA games, and left the bigger, 3D-rendered adventures to the home consoles.

There's actually a fine line Nintendo and other companies are going to have to tread, here. The 3DS now outpowers the Wii. But obviously, there are reasons for developing one over the other, and the decision they have to make is which games go on which system. Capcom is putting a true Resident Evil on the 3DS probably because of how powerful it is (it's running the same engine RE5 ran on, which is apparently not as good or not possible on the Wii) and how emersive the 3D experience will be. But the Pokemon games will most likely stay top-down (though I'm expecting FAR better renders.) But games like Metroid and Zelda and Mario will have to have more than just feature-based differentiating. Meaning Mario Galaxy will likely stay on the Wii, and the Mario sidescrollers will probably still be made for the 3DS.

Otherwise, they might as well have two home consoles out at one time, which would be a mess.
