E310 Media | First Trailer for Goldeneye on Wii on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With numerous copyright and infringment cases over the years between Nintendo, Microsoft, Activision and Rare, it seemed unlikely that Bond's finest gaming hour, Goldeneye 007, would be gracing any console, download or otherwise, any time soon.

And yet, it seems that with the recasting of Pierce Brosnan's likeness in the game to modern day James Bond actor Daniel Craig, Activision have managed to sidestep all the major issues.

Goldeneye 007 on Wii will provide a re-imagining of the original game's levels and structure, together with both splitscreen and online multiplayer. The game is scheduled for a November release, and although a DS version was also rumoured, it is Wii-only.

Is Goldeneye a relic of the past best left there, or deserving of an appreciative new audience? Have your say below.

Update: After a showing at Nintendo's E3 conference, Activision have issued a press release, revealing more details on the game including Classic Controller and Wii Zapper support, and an Achievements system;

With eight million copies sold and a legion of passionate fans worldwide, the Nintendo 64 version of GoldenEye defined multiplayer gaming for a generation of gamers in 1997. Now, a new take on the legendary James Bond adventure arrives with Activision Publishing's all-new GoldenEye 007, which was unveiled at Nintendo's press briefing, held today during the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) in Los Angeles.

Developed exclusively for Wii and based on the GoldeneEye film, GoldenEye 007 gives players the chance to use the lethal, gritty style of Daniel Craig's James Bond to outwit, outmaneuver and overtake an arms syndicate that threatens the world in an innovative, modern take on the legendary GoldenEye movie adventure. The game, which is slated for release this holiday season, is playable in Nintendo's booth in the West Hall, #5407.

"GoldenEye for the N64 was one of the most acclaimed games and fans regularly cite it as one of the most influential and important titles in history. We're thrilled to bring the new GoldenEye 007 to gamers around the world as an all-new adventure that seamlessly integrates nostalgic GoldenEye movie moments with innovative FPS gameplay and unique multiplayer action that is unrivaled on the platform."
- David Pokress, Head of Marketing for Licensed Properties, Activision Publishing.

GoldenEye 007 features an unprecedented lineup of four-player split-screen MP options that encourage social gaming, including 40 total characters, 8 classic Bond characters, 5 maps, 3 standard modes and 16 special modifiers that allow gamers to create hundreds of game combinations. GoldenEye 007 also features online multiplayer for up to 8 players designed for seasoned FPS online gamers with unique modes and a robust XP system for unlockables and achievements. GoldenEye 007 also supports the Classic Controller Pro for gamers who want to play with standard FPS controls and the Wii Zapper™ for "point and shoot" gamers; players will have several control scheme options, allowing them to experience GoldenEye 007 on Wii any way they want.

The GoldenEye 007 video game is developed by Eurocom under license from EON Productions Ltd and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM). For more information about the game, visit www.goldeneyegame.com.

Won't deny that it looks quite rough around the edges, but I'd be quite the hypocrite if I let that condemn the game, as I still play the original. Smilie

If all the old multiplayer modes like Paintball, Goldengun, Slappers-only (Smilie ) are playable online, I'll strongly consider looking into this. Smilie

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

OMG, OMG, OMG!

Activation making a platform exclusive game, damn the legal tape around this must be immense for that to happenSmilie

Holy shizz, if this is as epic as the original, I don't need to worry about it becoming available for download. Smilie
Didn't get to watch the trailer, apparently it's been removed by Activision. >.<

That vid works if you skip into it a bit. Best E3 news so far!

A lot of people are not keen on Activision (and for a good reason), but they have been generally kind to the Wii. If they put in the effort to the game, this new Goldeneye could be a success.

Edit:
Here's another trailer

Game looks acceptable except for character models, but that should be easy to improve.

Finally! I hate first person shooters but I used to love to play this game, so maybe I'll give them another chance.

It seems just so huge of an announcement. And for the Wii to top it all. I wonder how close to the original it will be though (content, level layout and objectives, etc) with the Rare team not being part of it... or so it seems, but i just can't imagine Microsoft letting Rare take part in it without the game being on 360 too (or even letting Rare work on a Wii exclusive title, period).

Just watched the trailer... holy shit, it looks like it's gonna be awesome. I loved the original, and if this sticks to the same content, but adds a few more things it'll be awesome.

I'm such a sucker for this game. I'll have to buy and have my brother over immediately. We killed hours playing this game.

The real question is, will this be a $50 (or £40) game? I don't know if I would pay full price despite the added features.

Uh oh sir Smilie

Does it seem like Activision's trailer was leaked? I dunno, this would've had much more impact if it was revealed at Nintendo's conference...

From the looks of it, the game looks promising. But I have to agree with Phoenixus, it does look a bit rough, but I think for a Wii game taking on an old N64 classic then it might not be so bad. If the online modes are good and not full of cheap people using nooby weapons all the time, then it could be a game worth buying. I will have to see more as it progresses

Most good, most good indeed. Canny wait!

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

I think this game has potential, but part of GoldenEye's charm came from the soundtrack and the cool animations. Like sneak up behind a guard and shoot his butt cheek and he'll rub his arse in pain. Or just watch him standing their and he'd try to swat a fly with his AK.
It's the little things like this which made GoldenEye what it is to me. Oh and the awesome gameplay.

I pray that this game succeeds. I do think the visuals could be polished though.

They are putting massive effort into this. A quick remake /cash-in it isn't.
So hopefully it will live upto the original.

I will point out though its not really a remake, as the maps are different. Its kinda as close as they can get without being sued.

Hopefully they haven't messed about with it too much. Just upgraded the graphics and stuff like that. Smilie

if your going to do something then do it right. the graphics look almost the same as the n64

Due to the legalities, one has to wonder how much this will recall Rare's original, and how much it will just be a new game in it's own right. If it sticks close to the original game, then just how much say did Rare/Microsoft have over it, anyway?

3 words, boys.....THIS IS AWESOME...Goldeneye will always have a special place in my heart, the stupidly tight challenges to get the cheat codes, DK head mode, it's legend, like OoT, though for different reasons, I for one cannot WAIT....move over Mario Galaxy 2 and MH Tri....there's another disc waiting for the Wii!!!!
