Rumour: 3DS To Have Widescreen? on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

New rumours appear to be flying around about the unveiling of Nintendo's new handheld gaming device, the '3DS', which will be shown off at this year's E3 convention. This time, the rumour mill seems to be spreading its love a bit wider....widescreen in fact. If an FCC filing submitted by Nintendo and Mitsumi (electronics manufacturer) are to be believed, then the next in line of Nintendo's portables could be in for some widescreen action.

Featured above is said to be a Target Board for the 3DS prototype. Clearly shown are two screens, one of which, shows a wider form factor, whilst the lower screen remains similar to the current DS' shape. Other parts to mention would be the fairly obvious speakers on the right hand side, as well as the inclusion of some form of memory card reader (bottom left) and what may possibly be an analogue stick (bottom middle). However, without a higher resolution image, it is very difficult to separate the various components, aside from the very obvious.

Along with the FCC report was a request by Nintendo stating that it would prefer the guts of its handheld not to be made public for a period of 180 days starting from last April. This would suggest that the time frame would finish just before the Christmas season....Coincidence? We'll have to see in the coming months.

Would you like to see the 3DS feature widescreens? And are you looking forward to the unveiling at E3 next month?

that "memory card reader" appears to be a DS slot, or an SD card slot.

Yeah DSi had a SD card slot so I'm expecting this to have one to cater to the DSi Ware.

So one wide screen and one normal screen, I wonder what the graphics are going to be like? I hope they're the same as the Gamecube's or better.

Don't forget that this is a prototype, we may very well see two wide screens on the final product.

I'm not against this choice as such.
It does make it highly unlikely the two screens will align together perfectly (like I was hoping for).
However, it also confirms it sticks to two screens rather then one (which I feared).

Still, what I'm really hoping for is more sensors.
Specificly GPS and compass so it can be used for Augemented Reality apps.

People keep saying this but why would they make a prototype with one widescreen and one normal? Unless they are considering it in the final product?

I hope to god if it's two screens they're both widescreen. The only way I'd accept one normal screen is if it's on the bottom and only because they had to make room for two juicy anologue sticks. Smilie

Two different screen sizes looks weird. But it might stop me from trying to touch the upper screen. Smilie

Antenna? Does anyone know how expensive GPS is these days? I'd love to have it in the next Nintendo handheld...

What Darkflame said. Also I think a Widescreen and a normal screen would generally look kinda weird next to each other. Yeah it'd work, but what about things that go on both screens? It would just look kinda off imo.

I'd much prefer two widescreens or two normal screens. Also this could still be a fake or a misinterpretation..

I hope the top panel is Capacitive Touch and the bottom one is resistance touch as with this method you would get the best of both worlds.

Pretty cheap I think.
Basicaly its just a radio receiver. That listens for the timing signals, and the rest is just software.
(compares the timing signals to eachother as well as a known list of satellites and their locations)

GPS is hell cool really, as its both very simple (basic triangulation trig) , and very sci-fi at the same time (you have to use freaking relativity man! The time-dilation effect is big enough for the satellites to give you the wrong position if you dont take it into account!).

The bottom screen is exactly the same as in the DS. My guess is Nintendo went with the current touch screen as a "proof of intent" since making a widescreen touchscreen manufactured for ONE prototype would have been costly and time consuming. Both screens will definitely be the same size since not doing so would kill 3DS games held in the "book-style" format.

about the bottom screen. They probably don't have the 3D touch screen in possession at this time and are using an old DS touch screen temporarily.

Nintendo will make both screens the same size, they have to.. for DS games which use up both screens to play cutscenes or images.. otherwise it would look pretty effed up.
