Whilst sales of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS were lower than expected, there is a silver lining. Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Ben Feder, pointed out recently that despite being held back by illegal downloads, the DS version accounts for around 50% of total unit sales in the 'Mature' of the system's massive back-catalogue.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is currently the highest-rated DS game, according to Metacritic, and Cubed3 gave it a highly positive 8/10 in May last year.
Below is what Feder had to say on the matter:
"I am very proud of Chinatown Wars. As of February 2010, Chinatown Wars’ unit sales in the US represented nearly 50 per cent of the unit sales of all M-rated DS titles in the history of the platform."At the same time, the handheld market is currently challenged by weak demand and by piracy. Piracy is a real and present danger for our industry and must be addressed, especially in the handheld market. The commercial performance of Chinatown Wars has certainly suffered at the hands of piracy."
With the PSP edition stalling at retail due to the system lacking any retail prowess anywhere other than in Japan right now, it has been left up to the iPhone and iPod Touch iterations to pick up the slack for the game, with them quickly becoming the highest grossing App Store games after release.
Should Take-Two have another stab at Grand Theft Auto on DS, perhaps for the 3DS format?
