Netflix Wii Discs Shipping to Subscribers on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Netflix is finally available on the Wii, with subscribers now receiving their start up discs in the mail for an on-demand weekend of film and tv, according to Kotaku.

The scheme was announced at the beginning of the year, letting users load up software to stream across their favourites onto TV via the Wii's internet connection. Oddly enough it's not available as a dedicated channel but as a dedicated application on the disc that's required to run each time you use the service.

With the Wii now setup to stream content the Netflix way, could the DS be next?

Mine has shipped. Can't wait to get it.
Unfortunately I'm at college and it's being shipped home, so it might be a while until I actually get it.

But in my semi-cramped dorm room, I don't mind just watching movies on my laptop, since my TV is about the same size. But it'll be really nice at home, not having to connect my laptop to the TV every time I want to watch something.

I'm still baffled by the disk requirement.
Surely the software cant be big, because the Wii will need all its ram for the streaming.

The most common theory is that disc based streaming is a loophole Netflix is exploiting in its exclusive deal with Microsoft to get streaming on the other consoles. Afterall, the PS3 requires a disc too.

I'm still baffled that my Wii is going to be able to spin this disc and play movies, but I can't spin any other disc and expect it to play movies.
Haha, not a huge complaint; my PS2 sits right next to my Wii, but that little guy is starting to crap out on me. It won't play burned discs, some extremely new discs, or discs with even the lightest markings on them.

I think that's because Nintendo doesn't want to pay the DVD Consortium anything.

Technically, the Wii can easily run stuff like Videolan, Mpeg2 decoding is easy enough.
