Reggie: Wii Has A Long Life-Span on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With rumours flying high and wide of a possible HD update to Nintendo's Wii console, it apparently seems that they have no such intention to do so in the coming months according to Reggie Fils-Aime stating that "We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it." He also suggested that no such announcement would appear at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this coming march, or hint at what would be coming at E3 in mid June.

Nintendo are hoping that the next instalments of its major franchises, namely, Metroid, Super Mario and Zelda, will keep the console selling out as it did in the first two years it launched rather than upgrading the hardware itself to keep up with their competitors.

Without completely ruling out the option of the rumoured console in a year or so, would it be worth it? And will the launch of the three major franchises in the 2010/11 keep the Wii sought after?

I'd be okay with buying an updated Wii so as long as it has some nice, new features (like the HD capabilites & DVD/Blu-Ray playback). And I wish they'd release the darn thing in black in the US...

Heck, I'd buy a new Wii even if only it was black! So shiny. Smilie

I think it has atleast another 2 or 3 years ahead of it, more and more people just keep buying and buying it.

I even think Nintendo will release the next handheld before they release the next console. And maybe even release the next console and sell it alongside the Wii.

well to be fair, a new handheld is due on the horizon, the DS has been out longer than the Wii in general. The wii still seems like quite new technology whereas the ds seems well established in terms of age.

I'm not bothered about a new wii console with HD, it will do well regardless especially with all the new first and third party games up and coming, there's no need. It will also be a smack in the mouth to anyone that bought a wii recently too.

In terms of age, a new DS may be needed. But it is not going to happen. The DS is well established and still selling well, it would make no sense to release one soon. Sure they even have another variant, the DSiXL, on the way as well. They only need to release whatever they have planned (I'm sure they have it mostly complete) when the market becomes too saturated.

Cough cough
I'm wondering whether they will announce it at e3 or not, would be cool! Though again it seems soon after the dsi, though it would be at least another year or so before it was released.

What the Wii needs most right now is better games. 2009 kinda blew. Less shovelware and more games could extend the system life quite a bit.
I'm not that concerned with HD; what I would like more would be some updates to the current system; mostly, most games are an incredible hassle to enjoy online, and none ever update. Beyond that, the kind of stuff I'd like is more accessory; if my Wii could play music and DVDs, that would be nice, but it isn't a requirement for me. A hard drive or third-party hard drive support would be greatly welcomed.

They need to hold off on all that. They shouldn't even announce their next project till Galaxy 2 and the Metriod sequel comes out. I think the releases should stimulate Wii owner's interest and help it out for a little bit...hopefully there will be a strong finish for the Wii seeing as how little 3rd party developers still don't know how to use properly program their games for the Wiimote.

What makes me antsy is that almost everything I'd like could be easily implemented into the Wii via channels, yet it isn't happening...

I would like to see a higher spec HD console only because that might encourage devs to focus on all 3 consoles at the same time. There are some tasty looking FPS that I would have liked with IR controls. third person games like lost planet would have been good on the wii. Certain devs might consider exclusives for the wii.

I'm starting to have the epiphany that nintendo actually thought this lifetime cycle out way before the release of the wii.

Silly me.

I honestly can\'t see a new Wii or DS coming out within the next two years. Something may be anounced in that time, but I don\'t think they would release anything.

I wrote a lot more explaining why I think that is. But I lost the internet connection and all I\'d writen when I tried to post it. I can\'t be arsed to explain now. Smilie

Please not have a WiiHD ever.
Its pointless.
Lets have a proper upgrade in 3-4 years time. Not a daft half-step.

Exactly.
Theres a lot of cool functionality left to explore on the Wii as it stands.
The channels arnt being used to their full, Connect24 is barely touched, and motion plus has only just started.

I'd like a mini-console-upgrade, or some major firmware upgrades then please Nintendo. Not necessarily HD, but other things that non-Nintendo gamers now take for granted.

Nintendo gamers can't be missing out for an additional 3-5 years. It's not fair.

Sounds awesome, I'll have to try it out.

My Wii boots instantly and gives me no errors.

PC games are getting more and more annoying to get working. So, no thanks.

(That said, GlovePIE itself rocks, and I do use my Wiimote on my PC for other things occasionally. But aside from Portal2 and the odd Indie game, I've had it for PC-as-a-gaming-platform).

I value my Nintendo consoles / handhelds specifically because they are not "Swiss Army Consoles." I want to play games on my video game machine. That is why I waited until PS2 was super cheap... DVD playability is NOT a reason to jack the price up.

Adding a music player and DVD playback to the Wii would take nothing more than a simple upgrade, and would be free. Wii games are put on DVD discs, so it's not like they need to add an upgraded laser. And if it can read DVDs, it can read CDs. Think about it; it can already play music with photo channel, it jsut only does one song at a time. And DVD playback being a simple upgrade away was revealed when hackers figured out how to do it with Homebrew Channel (but it was incredibly buggy and won't run the system fan during playback.) It would cost absolutely nothing to add these features. Hell, I'm pretty sure I was promised a dongle for DVD playback before the system came out, and THAT hasn't even happened.

That all aside, having higher definition games could allow for more third parties to develop for the Wii and not just the other two systems. I'd love to play Fallout and Call of Duty etc. without buying an Xbox.

I agree there. It's all about seeing the big picture. Stuff gets integrated all the time. Actually being able to play DVD's and CD's would only appeal to their beloved casual gamer market even more! Think about it:

Not only would the wii be able to help with:

> Exercise
> Weigh in on my progress with exercise
> Bringing the family together
> Bring my friends together

Adding in with the perks

> Netflix (new)
> Downloadable content
> Check the weather and news
> Upload photo album and slide shows

But now I can watch DVD's and listen to my favorite music. This really shouldn't cost Nintendo anything. Looking back at this list Satsubastsu 347, you did buy a swiss army console it just doesn't have as much knives as the rest of the consoles. And if you even added HD you'd be a FOOL not to buy this console. It would make developers happy and it would still be the cheapest of the three. That's already hard to pass down now, but think about the revenue you could open up by adding just a little smidget of this. Shit man, the PS2 could play DVD's there's no excuse for Nintendo now.

I'd hate to burst any bubble, but of course he's going to say "We are confident the Wii home entertainment console has a very long life in front of it.", because they want people to keep buying Wiis. He's not going to say "Ah, you got us. Yep, there's a new Wii coming soon, so you might as well stop buying the old one". This news = Smilie

I use to be very anti multi entertainment system when I was younger. But now I want companies to integrate features together to save space under the TV. They are better integrating these systems so quality doesnt have to be sacrificed
