Nintendo Releases Wii 4.2 Firmware Update

Nintendo Releases Wii 4.2 Firmware Update on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

From Nintendo's Wii Message regarding the update, sent just a few hours ago to worldwide Wii units, 4.2 does some improvements behind the scenes. For legit console users, this seems to mean that older game disks are running a little better, though this has yet to be verified.

But for those of us using the popular installed Homebrew Channel, it's a very different tale. Firmware Update 4.2 completely REMOVES the Channel, and all known installations regarding it, including the region-free player, the USB Loader, and even the DVD Player.

Needless to say, the homebrew community will eventually find a way around this, but this is certainly the biggest attack on potential Piracy yet by Nintendo.

Update

It seems that the update is also adversely affecting Wii owners without Homebrew as well. Many users have reported their consoles completely bricking during the installation process of 4.2. Technically it is because if 'boot2', one of the wii's bootloaders, encounters any errors during its update, like a loss of internet connection for example, it completely freezes, and doesn't allow the menu to appear upon switch-on.

Of course, this is of no consequence to those of us that have updated already, but to everyone else, be careful. Nintendo should address this soon, or at least have a truckload of consoles to repair.

I sold my wii the other week, even with the homebrew channel i never played the damn thing so i dont care anymore

Thats very odd, as previous boot swaps had a very carefull system....even cutting the power halfway couldnt brick the system.

Last update; Mice,Plumbers,Animatronics and Airbenders. We also have the socials; Facebook & G+

I'll be waiting until this update comes in disc form.. and will connect my Wii into a fuse connector with a battery back-up just in case the power goes out.

As is right now, no need to update just yet.

Opened homebrew channel, got an update though wireless roughter, installed new HBC and other two things it comes with, reset wii, downloaded the new wii update firmware as normal, done. Running the lastest wii firmware and still got homebrew channel.

I dont have the homebrew channel but I will not download it because i dont trust it at ALL because my friend says its useless and it slows down your wii and theres no point in hacking anymore

I haven't updated yet, not because I don't want to lose the homebrew channel, but because I don't want to get a random bricking.

Such stupidity nintendo. If anyone was going to pirate something, they would have a modchip. If I were nintendo, I'd make an update that bricks modchipped consoles and leaves the homebrew channel alone.

The weird thing is that I upgraded accidentally and it did not remove homebrew off my Wii.
