According to the Project Manager of Ju-On: The Grudge, Wii is indeed perfect for the horror genre. Talking in a new interview, Makoto Chida was very complimentary towards Nintendo's Wii console, explaining how if the system did not exist, then he believes the Ju-On game project (previewed here) never would have come to life. He also believes that other developers feel the same way, as has been shown by the development of titles such as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Cursed Mountain and Dead Space: Extraction.
Below is an extract from the interview:
GamePro: Even though there some big horror franchises like SAW coming to Xbox 360 and PS3, there's a tremendous amount of new horror games coming exclusively to the Wii: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, Cursed Mountain, Dead Space: Extraction, and now JU-ON: The Grudge. Do you think the Wii's becoming the console to own for horror lovers?Makoto Chida: We believe that the Wii is the most ideal console to experience horror games and started development of this title under that premise. If the Wii did not exist, I don't think that we would have ever developed this game. I believe that horror titles are released on the Wii because other developers also find the Wii to be an attractive console and I believe this trend will continue. However, the type of horror felt from games where you can defeat enemies and the type of horror felt from "exploring the darkness with only a flashlight" is completely different.
Do you think more developers should hop on the Wii horror train? Perhaps Square Enix with Nanashi no Game, for instance?
