Higher Sales Needed for More Chrono Trigger on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Square-Enix's Vice President recently touched upon the possibility of more games in the Chrono Trigger line; all depends on sales.

Speaking to rpgsite.net, Shinji Hashimoto mentioned that he wasn't impressed by the sales of the franchise, and despite their popularity, fans will need to buy more for any possible future Chrono game.

Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger? (Upon being told that the games are avery loved series) That's not what the sales tell me! If people want a sequel, they should buy more!

Chrono Trigger's recent DS edition did do very well in sales, managing (as of March this year) a little under 500,000 in Japan, a quarter of a million in the US, and strangely enough only 60,000 in Europe, even though it had never been released here before.
Many would attribute low stock, high cost for what is essentially a port, and very little advertising as the main reasons as to why Chrono Trigger DS hasn't broken a million.

Would you like to see Chrono's story continue, or was Chrono Cross enough?

Lower the cost, it's the reason for putting so many people off in the US.

But to me, this just says "no more Chrono". The game has sold very well in all 3 versions combined, yet they still hesitate when Star Ocean games do worse and still get sequels?

I thought about getting it, but I don't have a DS. Also, full price for a remake is a bit much.

People say it's a great game, but Europeans have never experienced that. It's another reason why it's not selling much here, I think. Retro is nice, but it's not retro for us.

Perhaps this is Square's why of saying that getting together the Chrono team at this time period (yeah I said it) is just too expensive. That team is just too high caliber (read:expensive) to take a gamble.

For me, never being able to experience it before was all the more reason to buy it. Ever since I first went on the internet I've been hearing tons of things about this character I'd never heard of, Crono, and a game that was apparantly one of the best RPGs ever made.

When I finally got to play it I was very happy, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Especially for the time it came out, I can see why it's so acclaimed.

But Satsubatsu has it right, I think. The "Dream Team" behind Chrono Trigger will just be too hard to get together again.

I've got a lot of RPGs for the DS I've hardly even played so I'm not gonna add yet another RPG to the list. Smilie

I really think Chrono should be an exception. It is a pretty exceptional RPG afterall. Smilie

Totally agree it's way better than your average final fantasy, plus they don't need to get the full team back together do they, just the essentials.

Wow, what an unbelievable douche. This is like the very embodiment of every accusation ever made that Square has lost its heart and soul and become just another corporate machine.

Because, you know, Square can afford to make 15 more Final Fantasy spinoffs and a half-assed God of War clone, but they can\'t be bothered with one of their most beloved properties of all time.

Y\'know what? Fuck Square. Masato Kato, Yasunori Mitsuda, and the folks at Monolith Soft (the only people you REALLY need to make a Chrono game) should just do what they did with Xenogears and make a spiritual sequel with a completely different company.

And does anyone else have trouble believing that the SaGa franchise is more profitable than Chrono? Well, I say good riddance, I wouldn\'t want sequels being made by a company that clearly cares more about profits these days than actually pleasing its fans or making GOOD GAMES.

That's it! No... no. That's right, no. What utter backbiting! This has gone and pissed me right off!

Guy's complaining about sales, what for a game that's been remade once already with minor (admittedly many) upgrades. If CTDS was an actual sequel, don't you think it would have sold much more.

What does he mean "that's not what sales tell me!". No, i'm calling total bullshit on this one. Even SE themselves are aware of how much people want a bloody sequel. They went as far as to shut down a fan project that had been on the works for half a decade!! And they have the nerve to groan at why people ask about Chrono Trigger! You're shutting down harmless fan projects? How about giving us a sequel then! omg, this ignorant bastard. This company is like a child with a toy box, with one specific toy that they never play with, but the moment someone else wants to play with it, they throw a tantrum.

Also...

Chrono Trigger's recent DS edition did do very well in sales, managing (as of March this year) a little under 500,000 in Japan, a quarter of a million in the US, and strangely enough only 60,000 in Europe, even though it had never been released here before.
I recently spoke with some buddy's over are VGCharts about this. At first i thought Europe was just letting the world down again, but not this time. This time, the horrible EU sales is all SE's fault. Side from low stock, would you people like to know why else its selling badly in these regions? Because SE didn't even bother to translate it. That's right, apparently, the game is not available in Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and i'm not too sure about french. Thems the facts right there, SE, you do not have the liberty to complain about sales, especially since it's doing very well considering the circumstances!

This company has some serious problems ya know, it really does. This is unfathomably fatuous. It's all well and fine to announce the 14th fucking entry to Final Fantasy even though we're miles away from the release of the 13th, yet the idea of a simple Chrono Trigger sequel is laughable? And totally dependent on sales?
I cringe whenever i buy a SE title ya know. I only want a few titles from them, Crystal Chronicles, Mana, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and a few random one offs here and there. Kingdom Hearts? Final Fantasy? They can burn in hell along with SE for all i care.

Bowser. You Booz, you lose.

Kingdom Hearts?

I can understand your rage, personally SE's attitude to the Chrono series is easily my biggest problem with them (and the fact it didn't take them long to come up with the next inevitably half-assed FF MMO)

But leave KH alone. It's an awesome series of consistent hugely fun quality, the only real complaint I have about it is how much Nomura's fanboyism affects the releases.

Ok well i guess i should go a bit easier on Kingdom Hearts. As you guessed, i am not a fan of the series. Tried it once, hated more or less everything about it. Disney character? No thanks. The gameplay felt slow and clunky. Granted, i only played the first one on the PS2 for a few minuets, so maybe it deserves more of a chance, and i am well aware of the profit the home console games rake in, so i wont deny it\'s quality until i play more of it. Sorry.
Sadly, this company has a backward way of thinking, and i despise the way they treat their series\'.

Bowser. You Booz, you lose.

It\'s thanks to Kingdom Hearts that I am indifferent, perhaps even fond of Disney again. I hated them before, but KH wouldn\'t be the same without it. Before giving KH a real chance I was incredibly dismissive about the series.

It doesn\'t take much to see the sheer amount of effort they\'ve put to Kingdom Hearts DS. The graphics are fantastic, easily some of the, if not THE best on DS. Some areas look like direct translations of their PS2 counterparts, details included. In depth story mode as well as CoOp and battle multiplayer modes with almost 20 playable characters, each with their own voice clips, special attacks and animations.

The battle system does feel clunky at first but eventually I think it plays like a dream. Not many JRPG battle systems are that fun IMO.
