E309 | New Super Mario Bros Wii to Feature Hints Mode on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed during E3 this week that those finding an area in New SMB Wii difficult can let the cpu take over.

The "hints", or as Miyamoto describes it "demo", mode was unearthed in a patent back in January, suggesting that if players are stuck, the game can take over temporarily. It looks as if the latest Mario game be one of the first to support the optional system. Finding a boss a little to tricky? Activate demo mode and watch your ickle character progress.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready. And yes, we're looking into this for future games.

What games do you think Nintendo will enable this feature for? Zelda? Mario? Metroid, perhaps?

no offence to Miyamoto, but i'd rather not use a 'demo' system like that in a game...
why not use the cpu power on getting wii speak working instead??

As long as it's totally optional, who cares?

And originaljohn... why would you want Wii Speak on a game that's not online?
Or was I misinformed, and does it actually have online multiplayer?

Pretty sure Miyamoto confirmed that it wouldn't be online?

It's not online, and it won't be.
As for this hints mode, I bet that indicates how pathetically easy it'll be... *sigh*.

I don't think it's a bad idea at all, as long as people who want a challenge also get their fix.
I often find myself not having the patience for getting past stuff in videogames, so maybe I'd even use this demo option. But I'd be sure to use it rarely. And if more people get to see the ending or last stages to the game this way, I see no problem with it really.

I don\'t see why everyone is complaining about this. It\'s actually a great idea, in my opinion. If it was forced upon people, then it wouldn\'t be so good, but this will most likely be an optional system.

There\'s many part in games, where they are just too hard for me to do. I then give up and just lose patience. The game is no longer entertaining, just frustrating and becomes boring. Something like this will come in handy for those parts in games. That way you won\'t have to miss out on the rest of the game, because of one part of it is far too hard.

The hardcore whine over anything, thinking they are some kind of elite group and anything to make gaming more accessible to a wider audience gets greeted with negativity. Just because some people are amazing at games, it doesn\'t mean others should miss out on such great game experiences.

People should stop being so arrogant.

Well it is an OPTION so no harm. Great option for those that need it.

I\'m shit at footie, but I want to play for Man U. Does that mean does that I should be given the option to skip training? No it doesn\'t, progress through a game is obviously going to become harder and more challenging as you beat each level, but this prepares for the final stages of the game. What makes you think that a person who can\'t beat a challenge will be able to complete the final stages of the game?

If you can\'t play the game, do you think you deserve to see the credits?

That\'s isn\'t really a good comparison BiaT, since games are a form of entertainment.
Since I paid a lot of money for a game of course I deserve to be able to experience the full deal the game has to offer. It\'s a bit like cheat codes in that regard.
Whether or not I want to make it hard for myself experiencing the products I buy should be my own decision and for that I applaud Miaymoto actually.

Sorry if I'm sounding ignorant, but there's no point answering your questions. This will be an optional system and there's nothing else to say. Your complaining over nothing and acting like typical arrogant hardcore gamer.

I'm guessing it was just a jab at me...

This is brillent.
They patented this ages ago, and its really good, imho.

It lets them make games without worrying about bits being too hard or too complex so much.
Built-in tutorial basicaly, make games more accessible without being too easy for those with expirence.

Good move Nintendo Smilie

(Incidently, many people seem to have the wrong idea, its not messages popping up, its more "recored actions played back, which you can take over when you want too")

I kinda understand what your saying, but on the other hand your saying people should be rewarded for not thinking or actually playing the game. In my experience I find that it's way more rewarding to figure out the problem my self. Have you actually ran through a game in "God Mode"? It gets boring after the 1st few stages/levels since there's no real obstacle/challenge in ones path. Yes I know that's not what's happening with NSBW, but who knows it maybe the start of the official "anyone can beat this game without trying" trend.

Also I don't think arrogance really plays a role until you start having people compare their completion times.

As for the frustrations of gaming I tend to play another game or just stop playing all together to give my mind a rest. After that I usually solve the problem(what ever it is) with a few more plays.

So all in all, yes I think people should miss out on those great game experience(being the end of the game or a 2nd play through with new characters) if they haven't honed their skills to the point to complete the game, but in the case of NSBW since it's only a demo and the player still has to play to complete the game. And even better the demo sounds like it'll teach them how to play too.

This is fantastic as it allows Nintendo to make games that are more difficult, so they appeal to the so called "hard core" gamers while at the same time still allowing more casual gamers to play and enjoy it too.

I'm not sure why people are complaining. Do they not realize it is totally optional and allows Nintendo to make their games harder (not saying they are going to, but the option is now there)? Plus it wouldn't use up more CPU power since it would essentially be preprogrammed and temporarily replace any user input processes.

Also, judging by several of the comments here it is very clear that people are complaining about a system they don't even understand...

Alright, this is just about where I draw the line in terms of trying to be "accomodating" to inexperienced players. What's the point of playing a game if it can play ITSELF????? I don't think even complete amateurs would want to play a game that's not... y'know... a GAME.

A good way to read the general gaming market crowd...
Can\'t see why some are in fumes over this since it is an option, but I can see this as a good thing for anyone who is new to playing games.
I can barely remember my dad helping me beat Bowser when I was 2 or 3 on smb(nes)/smw(snes)
Without that I doubt as a youngin\' I would have found games fun and woulda\' cried or quit and missed out on something that is really apart of my childhood (heh we both had fun)!
Please remember, ever since the beginning(mid 80\'s) Mario has had to have an appeal to the general(at that time the gaming market was bad, confusing, improper) and it was the pick up and play that brought us in, but we stayed for the Zeldas, Metroids, other Marios, etc. of Nintendo(I bet few of us jumped into games without a Mario experience)
...so I understand this option.

Is this not just the same as watching a video of the same game online?

You pay £30-40 to watch your Wii play your new game for you? If you want to make it casual friendly then do so and include a hard mode, but don't get the game to play itself, that defeats the point of it being a 'game'.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.
