Despite the DSi being a roaring sales success around the world, sadly it seems its download service is still struggling - at least over in Japan. Although there has already been plenty of new software released for the DSiWare service (such as the fantastic Art Style: Code, Pyoro and Paper Plane, as well as the quirky WarioWare: Snapped!), Nintendo's Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company's expectations have yet to be reached:
"We had a certain expectation as to the number of Wi-Fi connections for the Nintendo DSi, but our expectations have not been met so far in Japan. On the other hand, in the U.S., a relatively high connection ratio has been reported from the start..."We have to wrack our brains in order to come up with smart ways to deliver our messages effectively to a wide variety of different consumers. This thinking applies not only to the Nintendo DS but also to Wii...
"In the case of Nintendo platforms, (because the company has been challenging itself with several measures), net connection ratios have gradually been increasing as time goes by. We are making efforts with the hope that it will someday reach and go beyond the tipping point. The current situation, however, is that we are observing only a gradual increase."
With Square Enix confirming strong support for DSiWare, starting with the Intelligent Systems-developed Dragon Quest Wars, what else do you think can be done to rouse more interest in the service?
