Final Fantasy Echoes of Time Sales Prove Disappointing on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Update - As highlighted from the leaked Famitsu first day sales data earlier this week, it has be confirmed that the Wii version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time has proved to be a massive disappointment, despite a heavy TV advertising campaign. Check out the full Top 50 list below, showing how Fragile has plummeted due to low stock, as well as the hardware, highlighting how Wii was not boosted by FFCC's release at all:

Original Story - Despite lots of hype for the Pollux Engine and the inclusion of a Crystal Bearers trailer, FFCC: Echoes of Time has started very slow in Japan. Square Enix showed off its new Pollux Engine last year that allowed the easy transition of DS games to Wii, with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, the sequel to FFCC: Ring of Fates from DS, being practically the same game on DS and Wii. To entice gamers into picking up the title, Square Enix included a special new trailer of its forthcoming Wii exclusive Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

However, despite lots of TV and magazine coverage, as well as the trailer, both games have started very slow on their first day of release in Japan (last Thursday). The Nintendo DS edition only sold through 20% of its initial stock with sales hitting 58,000, with a further 4,000 units of the special FFCC-themed DSi bundle being sold (only 10,000 were issued).

As for the Wii version, it seems that expectations were low anyway, with retailers only ordering 56,000 copies in the first week. And it looks like the caution was worth it as only 25% of that total was sold on Day One (normally the biggest sales day, although there is a chance of sales picking up over the weekend), meaning 14,000 copies passed through to consumers. Should this be cause for concern for Square Enix and its exclusive release of The Crystal Bearers later this year, or is it merely a case of the consumer just not willing to pay for a DS game on their Wii?

Whatever the case, it looks like the end result is that franchise's userbase has been further watered-down. The excellent Ring of Fates on DS sold around 300,000 units in total and there are about that many copies of the new DS game on the market right now, yet adding all the current versions' sales together only comes to about 60% of what Ring of Fates alone did on its first day's release! We will find out the final results in a few days, but for now things hardly look rosey.

The other releases on the same day for other formats are as follows:

  • Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 (PSP, Bandai Namco) - 135,000 (70% sell-through of initial stock)
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PSP, Konami) - 46,000 (40%)
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS2, Konami) - 42,500 (35%)
  • Soul Eater: Battle Resonance (PS2, Bandai Namco) - 6,500 (45%)
Tales of the World has already sold more than the first game did in its entire first week and looks to be putting the recent mainline entry, Tales of Hearts on DS, to shame. Whether or not it tails off quicker, though, is yet to be seen. The game has sold through 70% of its stock already, so Bandai Namco had better be quick with a re-stock soon. As for Konami's tactics employed with PES 2009 this year, they seem to have back-fired considerably as the PS2 edition last year started with 156,000 sales! The PS3 version released a couple of months ago performed roughly the same as 2008's edition, so Konami's plan to migrate PS2 gamers to Sony's other system clearly has not worked as planned. The PSP edition has hardly increased either, with last year's edition starting with 36,000 sales.

Perhaps more stock should have been put into releasing the Wii version alongside the PS3 and Xbox 360 iterations, rather than delaying it, pushing the Wii game back to April...

I am not surprised, not even in the slightest!
I saw this game, despite maybe being good, and never thought of getting it.
FF always was about great graphics with known RPG mechanics, even Crystal Chronicles or excellent tactic-games. But not this somewhere awkward concept. People see when they tend to be cashed with a classic game for full price as with Wii-GBA-Echoes.
And why buying this title on DS anyway? It's okay to give this game a shot or a closer look, but it's not a must-have, especially on its first day. And a trailer only as a sales boost, which surely will be found soon on Youtube, you haven't got a lot of arguments for buying this game.

Come on, you have tons of RPGs on GBA and DS, you have to pull off something great, even more then an action-RPG. Why don't people release a ton of RPGs on Wii? I would certainly buy some.

People think, they'll get a lukewarm, half this half that game with Echoes, so they don't know what to think about this...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Echoes of Time seems like a cheap multiplayer redo of RoF to me, and it looks like it too. I'll still be getting it and am excited for the multiplayer options, but the story seems to be the weakest in the series yet.

I think there are a lot of people who will be "getting it eventually".

Will wait until I actually play the game to see if it's worth it. Still, 20,000-30,0000 copies sold in a week on Wii and almost 60,000 on DS amounts to almost close to 100,000 in a week (since it's basically the same game). I think it will ultimately do between 1,000,000-1,500,000 worldwide between both versions, with the DS one outselling it.

No shock here. I wouldn't pay money for a Wii game that looks like a DS game.

Ditto, and the sooner we get a PROPER FF game the better (but chances of that are none).

I'm currently playing the DS version and after an hour it's almost EXACTLY the same as Ring of Fates. No bad thing, though, as I loved RoF...and really hoped a sequel would be made using the same engine. Seems I got my wish!

Well I hope with the disappointing sales of this and other recent DS titles eg. two new Chocobo games, Sigma Harmonics, Front Mission 2089 etc, that theyll start putting more thought and effort into the DS side of things, although the new Kingdom Hearts, DQIX, Blood of bahamut and saga 2 all look good. I hope they also learn that chucking Final Fantasy onto the title doesnt mean instant sales for them. But hey, they wont...

Please tell me you're joking here...? Chocobo Dungeon is fantastic, Chocobo Tales 2 is just as good as the first game, Sigma Harmonics is very stylish, has a great soundtrack and seems very suited to Western tastes, whilst Front Mission 2089 was ported over from mobile phones due to the fan-base requesting it enough.

yep, FFCC EOT on Wii is, well ... just look at it ! DS graphics on the Wii ? Come on SquareEnix ! The idea behind the concept might have been good, but this was clearly meant to FAIL to sell well... The simple idea of such a game on Wii might even have prevented it from selling better if it had been a DS exclusive. For one, i, personnally, didn\'t even care to read tests or watch trailers, i felt it was not going to be so interesting. They should have concentrated on crystal bearers and let this one be a DS exclusive, like Ring of Fates.

On another topic, so, Fragile dropped in the charts because the stocks were refilled or what ? i highly hope it manages to surpass at the very least the 100.000 units sold bar, there in Japan, even if it is in the long run. Such amazing games deserve to sell well and the Wii needs more of \'em.

The thing is, it's way cheaper than most Wii games, and it means having a solid FFCC multiplayer without buying more than one copy.

As for the visuals, it's understandable, I don't see how else they could get the Wii version to do multiplayer with the DS version.

There were only around 35,000 copies shipped to retailers initially, and with it selling ~23,000 in its first week and a further 5,000-6,000 this week it could well be a case of Bandai Namco underestimating demand.

We have an interview coming up with the producer of the game who says there is the soundtrack and an anime show coming soon in Japan to promote it further, so perhaps BanNam will get more stock out in the near future. I guess we'll see next week, if it just disappears completey or not...

Doesn't bother me... I got a bit sick of FF I think SE are just milking it to the point that it doesn't feel like FF back in the day... prob too many remakes, etc.

Its easy enough to have two different quality graphical environments with the exact same layout.

Agreed with Darkflame, the only issue in making the two games able to communicate with each other is the level layouts which must be completely the same.

The very least they should have done would have been giving the graphics better textures on the Wii ... and yet they didn't. They just tried to cash in on the name of Final Fantasy by introducing a new hyped concept IMO. Look at how good Crystal Bearers look ! They CAN make good looking games on the Wii, they're just too lazy to do it all the time.

jesusraz>Thanks for the info, i'm a bit more relieved about this game's future now, i just hope it ends up being published in the US at the very least (if not released in Europe, i'll just import it then). Didn't XSEED games say they were very interested in publishing it stateside ?

Not sure where you read that (maybe here courtesy of Hero of Legend's thread on NeoGAF?), but I was talking to XSEED recently about the game and they've got their eye on it. I guess it boils down to whether or not Namco Hometek decides to handle a US release. I've also been talking to Rising Star about it...but we'll see. If Hometek grab it, then Namco Bandai Europe and Atari will bring it here (eventually).

Guess what ? I read it here, on C3, quite some time ago. EDIT : So yes, where you said i would have, but at first i didn\'t know we were talking about the same thing. i didn\'t remember it was based off a NEOGAF forum thread Smilie.

Yes, i\'m good at remembering about articles about great Wii games possibly being released outside Japan (here Fragile and Sky Crawlers) Smilie

Considering how they brought Dawn of the New World to the US and how they decided that they may not release it at all in Europe, i wouldn\'t keep my hopes too high if it turns out to be the case. I have much ore faith in XSEED Games in the case of Fragile, cause it would almost automatically mean that Rising Star Games would handle the publishing here in Europe.

Either way though, i only hope for an english translation, even if it means importing a US version, that would be enough to make me happy ^^.

Well I will still probably get it since most of my friends will get it, but it does looks quite identical to Ring of Fates.
