EA Sports: Brits Struggle with Sporting Names

By Jorge Ba-oh 09.09.2008 4

EA have issued perhaps one of the most bizarre press releases, looking into the celebrity sporting knowledge of Britons.

In a bid to promote Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, the company has decided to go about insulting British sporting knowledge: nearly half of all Brits don't know the birth name of the star behind the game, Tiger Woods.

EA Sports carried out the poll earlier this year, finding out that only 40% guessed correctly that "Eldrick Woods" wasn't a popular place to walk your dog. Next up in the firing line was England's cricketing legend Andrew Flintoff with nearly half of Brits surveyed thinking his nickname "Freddie Flintof" was a completely different person.

In other statistics:

  • 51% thought that David Beckham was just a nickname
  • Almost 60% didn't realise that John Cleese was originally named John Cheese
  • 60% thought that Christian Bale was a stage name
  • Over 95% people didn't know that Prince was the singers real name
  • 99% realised that Elton John, Jordan and Meatloaf weren't real names.
  • The company have not disclosed how many people, or types that were surveyed. A bunch of drunken folk in the local pub? Probably.

I knew about John Cleese's real name, and really dont care about the rest.

Also, I hardly think its anything negative people not knowing Prince's real name, given how many he has had.

I mean, the bigger supprise is that so few people know he is Michael Jackson...

This was probably the most stupid press release I've ever read. I don't think it's such a bad thing that people don't know a star's "Real Name" - who really cares, as long as they perform well and if featuring in a game, the game is good.

John Cleese's family name was changed like 20 years before he was born. :/ So how has John Cheese ever been his real name?

Don't get why so many would think David Beckam was a nickname, surely that one was BS. I also think the percentage for the bottom one is BS.

I heard about Tiger Woods name on a radio quiz the other day. I can't say I care to be honest.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.
