Sega Has High Hopes for Samba De Amigo Wii

By Jorge Ba-oh 30.08.2008 8

Sega's UK division have proclaimed positive expectations for the upcoming Wii sequel to the Dreamcast hit, Samba De Amigo.

The rhythm game brought adorable and amusing rhythm gameplay to Sega's last home console back in 2000 and has since developed a strong following in both the original game and franchise. Speaking to industry magazine MCV, Sega Product Manager Ben Payne discussed company expectations for the Wii release.

We've made a game that the hardcore will enjoy, but it'll also embrace this new casual audience. 95 per cent of those who'll buy Samba will never have heard of the Dreamcast version, and that's because it's a game for everyone.

Unlike the original, the game doesn't come with its own maracas.

In the Dreamcast days we made a game that was a bit before its time, especially in terms of licensed music. Now Singstar and Guitar Hero have come and owned that section, but what we're doing is something more light-hearted. It's a game where you just collapse in fits of giggles.

Samba De Amigo is due to shake its way to Wii next week, on September 5th 2008.

I disagree with the \"hardcore\" part.

EDIT: that doesn\'t mean that I think it will be bad or boring, I actually want to buy it... it\'s just I myself do not count music games in the hardcore section.

Why?

I really think this is going to be an important game that SEGA will be looking at with regard to its Wii support. There have been a couple of these already: Sonic and the Secret Rings' success clearly led to greater Sonic support on the system, and House of the Dead 2&3 Return and Ghost Squad were seemingly released to confirm to the company that the development of House Of The Dead: Overkill would be worthwhile.

They seem to have been lavishing a lot of attention on this one, so I hope it does well for them. If Samba sells well, I reckon we can expect a couple more Dreamcast sequels. There are two major ones that people are after already, and a certain one set in space has debatably been preluded to in Samba itself with the appearance of a guest character.

Awesome game.

It's the sort of game that could do awfully well in the UK if they marketed it right.

I absolutely loathe Nintendo's approach of "family fun for everyone" in their marketing for games like Metrod Prime 3, but if that sort of stance was taken with Samba, it could be a hit. Here's hoping it will be, anyway.

So the developer is excited about its own game. That's always good to know... Smilie

When a developer says "Nah, our game sucks", now that would be news. Smilie

After reading the IGN developer diaries, I think this is gonna be great. I'm surprised by how much effort gearbox is putting into the game.

Shenmue III is apparently a secret unlockable mini-game in Samba De Amigo Wii.
