Virtua Tennis Coming to Nintendo Wii?

By Adam Riley 01.06.2008 5

The latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine has arrived at Cubed³ Headquarters and inside is an extremely interesting interview with Sumo Digital about its latest SEGA tennis title. Steve Lycett, Executive Producer of the project was asked to talk about the development process for SEGA Superstars Tennis on Wii, and in it he revealed the game actually started as a Wii version of Virtua Tennis 3:

April 2007: We do some prototyping on a potential Wii version of Virtua Tennis 3 and whilst we're doing that we make all the characters have big heads. SEGA pay us a visit and on seeing this suggest we pop in Sonic instead of a big-headed Federer. As such, potential character defamation cases are avoided and the seeds of SEGA Superstar Tennis are born.

Could SUMO Digital's next Wii project actually be a full-blown entry into the immensely popular Virtua Tennis series then? Considering the idea was already there and a prototype was being worked on, then chances do seem very high, especially given how the Wii edition of SEGA Superstars Tennis has far out-sold all other editions so far across Europe.

how crappy can their decisions be? big heads? do they think a masses game will sell more due to that? masses want realism, not super deformed stuff.

And how, in a game that started being done for Wii alone, I mean, virtua tennis 3 for PS3 and X360 has been out for a while now, how did we end up with the worse version with tackled on controls and no online?

Is Sega dumb? We want Virtua Tennis Wii without super deformed crap done now, not by Sumo Digital but AM3.

Oh... and don\'t dare to go recycle PS2 assets like those Top Spin idiots, and don\'t forget the Online mode or I won\'t purchase it, just like I did with this game; and will with Top Spin.

Agree entirely. I've got VT3 for PC and it's fantastic, I love the single player campaign. Mini-games are good if done right.

I want a decent controlled game, no casual bull - strong single player and solid online. Sold.

Come on SEGA.

SST isnt that bad...if you give it a chance. Would rather play Virtua Tennis 3 though.

Oh god this annoys me.

why do companies think "well it'll sell more than virtua tennis cuz it has sonic in". Realistic games sell. Even realistic games on Wii. Why? BECAUSE ITS STILL BLOODY TENNIS. People aren't going to go "nahh, not playing this cuz it has federa in", nor are they going to say "omg i can't play a game that isn't family friendly by having sonic in ".

IDIOTS.

I played sega superstard a few times, and I have to say it is one of the lamest tennis games ever made. That;s just my opinion, probably because found it extremely hard to control.

Can brawl anytime now.....if you want an easy win
