The latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine has arrived at Cubed³ Headquarters and inside is an extremely interesting interview with Sumo Digital about its latest SEGA tennis title. Steve Lycett, Executive Producer of the project was asked to talk about the development process for SEGA Superstars Tennis on Wii, and in it he revealed the game actually started as a Wii version of Virtua Tennis 3:
April 2007: We do some prototyping on a potential Wii version of Virtua Tennis 3 and whilst we're doing that we make all the characters have big heads. SEGA pay us a visit and on seeing this suggest we pop in Sonic instead of a big-headed Federer. As such, potential character defamation cases are avoided and the seeds of SEGA Superstar Tennis are born.
Could SUMO Digital's next Wii project actually be a full-blown entry into the immensely popular Virtua Tennis series then? Considering the idea was already there and a prototype was being worked on, then chances do seem very high, especially given how the Wii edition of SEGA Superstars Tennis has far out-sold all other editions so far across Europe.
