I've come to dislike IGN over the past few weeks...
If MP3 states the game is "nearing completion" then surely that must be true. Retro Studios wouldn't lie like that would they?
Hope it is true, I'm in need for some 2D Samus action alongside the 3D one.
Well if this hint is anything to go by, then Metroid Dread will have been in development for a very long time now. I'm hoping if the game is real that we can expect something as big as Super Metroid, and not a shorter game like Fusion. Fusion was great, but Super Metroid was much bigger and longer.
The FPS/FPA Metroids are all fine and dandy but I would love to play another 2d or 3rd person metroid as well.
"Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion."
That's the full quote from the game.
Based on what wAyNe said, if Retro Studios threw that tidbit in there, they are basically announcing it's near-finished status. I'm almost positive this is true! YAY!
I can't confirm or deny this, since I honestly know nothing about Metroid Dread
[no, really...I know NOTHING...I'm not teasing or trying to be coy this time ]
If this was an intentional reference (as opposed to just using the word Dread because it sounds good), I'm guessing it was just wishful thinking by one of the many Metroid fans that work here (or just an inside joke for the hard core Metroid fans out there).
But, as I said, I don't know anything about Dread, other than what I've read about it here, so I can't rule anything out.

To me it seems like more an in-joke than anything else. A bit like the Dolphin picture from Rare's Banjo-Kazooie on the N64.
But the game was revealed, albeit accidentally on that release list, back in 2005 and now Metroid Prime Pinball and Metroid Prime Hunters have both been out for ages, it's definitely time for Metroid Dread to rear its head again in 2008, I reckon.
Perhaps sales of Super Metroid on Virtual Console will help convince the big-wigs to unleash Intelligent Systems on this project once more!
Mongo, thanks for adding your comments on this story...I actually came in just now to post a request for your thoughts!
I hope so, it's more likely than another 3D game. A revertion back to 2D would be sweet on the DS, they could impliment some touch control elements where needed.{LS]
If you ask me, it could just be an in-joke, or maybe this was Metroid Dread all along, a project in MP3. Or does that have any story relevance whatsoever? ^^;
Anyway, I'd give anything for another 2D Metroid. I've lost but all my faith of the Metroid series.
