It has come to light that a new version of Burnout for Nintendo DS and Wii has sadly been cancelled. Paul Dibden, a chap involved with the project, has posted up prototype images of the proposed Nintendo DS version of a Nintendo-exclusive Burnout, going by the name of Burnout Freestyle and supposedly being developed by series creators, UK development outfit Criterion Games.
The last time a Nintendo format saw a Burnout release was back in the days of the GameCube when the sequel to the extremely popular racing franchise, Burnout II: Point of Impact blew all other entries into the genre on that system away. Whilst Criterion had expressed its love of all things Nintendo in the past, that did not stop Burnout 3 from being cancelled, and no further sign of the series appearing on Nintendo systems up until the woeful cash-in of Burnout Legends back in November 2005 from a team called Visual Impact (who recently worked on such greats as Imagine Babysitters on DS and Babysitting Party on Wii).
What can be expected from Burnout Freestyle, though? Sadly it looks like we will never find out, since the Nintendo DS version, and a Wii iteration, have apparently been quietly canned. All that is left of these intriguing games are some mock-up images from the DS game, all of which can be found in the media folder below.
Would you have liked to have seen a proper Criterion-developed Burnout on Wii and/or DS?
